If the first week or so is any indication of how the rest of the 2021-22 campaign will unfold, records will surely fall.
The area saw seven perfect games, including a couple of newbies, while another bowler looked to follow up his Allentown-leading average from a season ago.
Lale Byers from Quakertown can certainly be considered a veteran of the sport, starting in Juniors and now competing as a 70-year-old. Absent on his list of accomplishments was 300. It wasn’t for lack of trying and opportunities as Byers has three 299s and a 298.
But all of the past frustrations were wiped away in moments as Byers opened the second week of the season in the Community Church League at Earl Bowl in Quakertown with an “easy” dozen.
“I was throwing the ball so easy, and everything felt great,” said Byers. “I threw four practice balls, two on each lane and struck four times. I had just a lovely line and it started creeping into my head that I had a shot at 300 after the eighth frame.”
Nine racks up and nine racks down. It’s not unfamiliar territory for the righty but it was time to finish the deal.
“The 10th and 11th ones came off really well. It was one of those games where my shots weren’t all over the place. The key for the last shot was not doing something dumb on my first step.”
Byers’ march to the foul line resulted in a ball path a bit off the intended trajectory. Despite being right of target, he was confident the ball would turn the corner.
“I told myself that this thing has a chance. What a feeling when they all went down. It gives me the determination to do it again,” Byers said.
He opened Game 2 with a strike and then the lanes transitioned. Strikes turned to splits but Byers said he converted a couple “mother of all splits” adding up to a 212. He polished off his night’s work with 184 for a 696.
Byers is coming off a 206 norm from 2019-20 and, with the hot start, looks to up that number to 210.
Keeler misses record
Coming off a season that saw him average an Allentown-best 246 at Earl Bowl in Earlington, Scott Keeler is off and running with a perfect game. He tacked on 279 and 278 for an 857, falling one stick shy of Earl’s house record.
One week before Byers shot 300, Matt Reimer kicked off his season with his first career 300 game in the middle of a 713 effort.
Blue Valley joined in the fun with a pair of sharpshooters dropping a dozen. Keith Wagner and Ron High wielded hot hands in the talent-laden Friday Scratch Trios league at the Wind Gap center.
Tuesday nights the pins fall with regularity at Town & Country. In particular, the 110 participants in the Gary Piripavel Memorial League power many of the area’s big numbers. Brandon Henritzy started festivities with a perfect game, while recent two-time Hall of Famer Krista Sandt picked up the women’s first 700 of the season with a 719.
Tyler Longenbach nabbed his third career perfect game in the Phoenix League at Skylanes to cap the early season fireworks.
Darby wins marathon
When Owen Darby gets into a rhythm, the dust cloud inundates the competitors behind him.
But last Monday in the Labor Day Marathon held at Jordan Lanes, Darby found himself eighth after seven games with one remaining. Maybe the lefty had the field right where he wanted them as he rattled off the final 12 strikes for a 300, leaving the other 77 bowlers spitting dust.
Darby shot 1,827, averaging 228 for the $1,200 top prize, followed by Jason Stetina who tallied 1,785, pocketing $800. The final cash spot belonged to Chico Santiago with 1,721 and $200.
Brandon Runk and Joe Paluszek both converted the 7-10 split. The duo was bowling on the same pair, and one is a righty and one a lefty. Odds?
