Mountain Hawks and Black Knights Play to Exciting 3-3 Draw in League Opener - Lehigh University Athletics

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team scored two early goals and that 2-0 margin stood until the 71st minute, when four goals happened in 6:04. The end result was a 3-3 draw vs. Army West Point on Saturday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Black Knights scored twice to pull even at two, junior Julianna Bonner responded, but Army tied the score again just 56 seconds later. Lehigh's record goes to 2-4-1 and 0-0-1 in Patriot League play, ahead of a Wednesday night showdown at Lafayette.

"It was a super emotional game," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "Army was what we thought they were. They're going to battle, they're going to fight. We struggled a little bit to adjust to their system change, but we fought back. It was a cool atmosphere [in the crowd]. I thought our players played well."

Lehigh's three goals were its most against Army since 2004, while the Black Knights' three were their most vs. the Mountain Hawks since 2003.

It didn't take long for Lehigh to take a 2-0 lead. First, in the seventh minute, freshman Hope Flanegin played the ball into the box where senior Courtney Supp headed it towards goal. Junior Ryelle Shuey eventually put it away at the 6:11 mark. Less than three minutes later, Bonner found sophomore Ava Schaller in the box, who made a move and fired inside the right post at 9:08.
That score remained until deep into the second half. Army West Point pulled within 2-1 at 70:04 off a corner kick before pulling even at 74:08 following a feed into the box to Izzy Fontana, who found the lower left side of the goal.

It took just 1:04 for the Mountain Hawks to go ahead, as junior Mattie Murphy made a feed into the box, where Bonner's header sailed perfectly into the top left corner of the goal. That made it 3-2 at 75:12. Less than a minute later, Army tied the score again, as Daniela Mendoza played it into the far post to Alyssa Carfagno, who tapped it in at 76:08.

The chances continued over the ensuing minutes, with each side firing three more shots over the final 13:52. Shots over the two overtime periods were 8-2 in favor of the Black Knights, with the Mountain Hawks making five saves – two of which were team saves – made by seniors Erin Keefe and Megan Lundmark. Keefe accounted for two team saves for the game, and a huge block in the final minutes to preserve the 3-3 draw. "We're hungry to score goals," said Lambinus. "We're attacking. We want to score goals, we're really good on set pieces. We're dangerous in the counter attack; we have some good athletes up there. We do need to clean up a little bit of the defensive work."

Final shots were 27-14 in favor of Army while corner kicks were 9-8 in Lehigh's favor. Freshman Abby Trainor finished with seven saves across Sage Strohman, who tallied three.

"The lesson we can take is we can play good soccer," said Lambinus. "We have a good attitude, we fight back. To give up two goals like that, then come back and fight, then give up another goal, but then battle the rest of the way and do pretty well, that means we have a lot of fight. We play for each other. There are a lot of really good positives to take out of this game."

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Lafayette to face the Leopards. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
