Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 could be surprisingly cheaper than expected according to new information.
YouTuber M. Brandon Lee claims that a source in Europe who works for a “major cellular chain” provided him with some information about the upcoming colours, release date and price of the Pixel 6.
The information tallies with previous leaks about the new Android device and has been backed up by 9To5Google’s sources. The devices are expected to be announced on October 19th, with a general release date of October 28th. But the most interesting piece of news is how much the two devices will cost. Lee’s source says that the base model Pixel 6 will cost €649, whereas the Pro model will cost €899.
There are no US prices yet and the final figure will vary per region, no to mention differing taxes between countries. But the less technically accomplished Pixel 5 launched in Europe for €629, which is €20 cheaper than the proposed price of the new Pixel 6. Google didn’t launch a “pro” or “XL” Pixel 5 last year, but the Pixel 4XL was priced at €899 in Europe, whilst the Pixel 4 was €749.
So if Lee’s sources are accurate, it looks like Google is following a very similar strategy to the Pixel 4 releases with an identical price for the top model, but a much cheaper entry level model. Considering that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will come with hugely improved cameras, larger batteries and Google’s new Tensor chip, with the Pro model including a 120Hz AMOLED display, Google has done well to keep prices down. Not least in the face of Apple and Samsung’s top models costing over $1000.
Elsewhere, Lee says an imaged shared by his source shows that two new colours will also be introduced when both phones launch: “fog” and “carbon”, which are Google’s names for its black and green colourways. Although it’s not clear which regions will get which colours, we'll have to wait until launch day to find out.
Google has taken the unusual step of teasing the Pixel 6 long before it launched. Officially it announced the device in August and has since run several promotions across the world, including producing a bag of potato chips in Japan to promote its new in-house Tensor SoC.
What’s important, though, is how well the new devices perform, particularly in the camera department. Google’s crown for still photography has been seriously challenged in the last two years by Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra and Apple’s new iPhone 13 Pro Max. Even with a competitive price, the search company will need to deliver technologically to contend with high-flying rivals.
