MARQUETTE, MI - Shipping season is underway on the Great Lakes, but some of the big lakers are bunched up in a group just off the Marquette coastline today, apparently waiting out some big winds whipping across Lake Superior.
A Gale Warning was issued for Lake Superior by the National Weather Service and lasts until 8 p.m. tonight. Westerly winds up to 35 mph are forecast to kick up waves that could reach 12 feet on the largest of the Great Lakes.
“Strong winds will cause hazardous waves which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility, the NWS Gale Warning statement reads. “Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for severe conditions.”
Some of the freighters traversing Lake Superior started hugging the coastline or diverting to protected areas late Thursday, according to WLUC and ship enthusiasts who track their progress. Waiting along the U.P. coast near Marquette this morning were the well-known Arthur M. Anderson, the Kaye E. Barker and about four others. Farther east, other big ships were hanging out near Whitefish Point.
