Happy Monday, April 11, Birmingham! It’s that time of the week where we update you with the hottest news you might have missed. This time around, we’ve got exciting new openings and reopenings including Sam’s Super Samwiches, Black-owned businesses in the Magic City Match program, the USFL 2022 schedule and more. Read on for all the details.

Patchwork Farms in Vestavia Hills has a lot to look forward to. The Alta, a new luxury hotel, is on the horizon and expected to break ground later this year. The development is bringing lots of new businesses to the neighborhood, including a spa, 10,000 square feet of event space, a coffee shop and a high-end restaurant.

Everyone has been on the edge of their seats anticipating the reopening of Sam’s Super Samwiches. Following the heartbreaking passing of founder Sammy Graphos, the beloved sandwich shop has a new location in Homewood and is set to reopen on May 2.

Additionally, five new businesses opened their doors around town:

  • The Spun Cow serves up artisan ice cream and fresh-spun cotton candy at The Pizitz Food Hall.
  • Goldfish Swim School gives swimming lessons and teaches kids about water safety in Hoover.
  • The Vibe Bar and Lounge brings good vibes and drink specials to downtown Birmingham.
  • Beauty and Beyond offers hair products, synthetic hair, clothes, makeup + more in Hoover.
  • Besito’s Mexican Kitchen is family-owned and serves delicious traditional Mexican eats in Greystone.

Are you ready for some football? Opening day of the inagural USFL 2022 season is approaching fast. Catch the Birmingham Stallions take on the New Jersey Generals on Saturday, April 16 at 7:30PM, live at Protective Stadium or televised on Fox, NBC and Peacock. All 10 preseason games take place at Legion Field and Protective Stadium. Check out the full schedule here.

Attention job-seekers: almost 24K jobs in Birmingham-Hoover are available right now

If you’re in the market for a new job, you’re in luck. There are currently 10 employers in the area with over 160 job openings each. The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Children’s of Alabama, Advance Auto Parts, Inc., Regions Financial Corporation and more have several openings available NOW. 25 Black-owned businesses have been selected for the Magic City Match cohort

Birmingham’s newest grant program, Magic City Match, has announced the 25 Black-owned businesses that are part of their inaugural cohort. The program distributes $500K to Black-owned businesses in Birmingham. Among the cohort is LaToya Jolly of Jolly Cakes, Wanda and Eugene Jones of Talk of the Town Barbershop and Alexis Kimbrough of Herban Soul Café. Check out all of the selected grant winners here.
