Aqeel Glass might seem like a long shot to even make the practice squad for the Buccaneers in 2022, but sometimes long shot stories are the best in the NFL.
Depth quarterbacks are rarely glamorous. We have seen firsthand as Buccaneers fans that the discourse on the guys on the depth chart behind Tom Brady gets divisive quickly. Is divisive the right word?
Regardless, any team that legitimately cares about being good is going to have a steady stream of new options coming in every year to ensure that the best QB talent possible is on the field.
Guys get injured all the time. Good players also strangely regress. You want bodies in the room to ensure that the best guy is always leading the team. Is Alabama A&M quarterback Aqeel Glass that option? Perhaps not to step on the field anytime soon, but he is a fun story to follow as a guy that could make the practice squad and get a shot as a backup down the line.
Glass is a name that most people might not recognize. Alabama A&M might not be a team that everyone sees on T.V. each week, but that doesn’t mean that his college career wasn’t impressive.
The Buccaneer hopeful was the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2020 and 2021 and was the recipient of the Deacon Jones Award in the same years, and award that is given to the outstanding HBCU player in the country. This is no small honor to win the award two years in a row.
Glass epitomized outstanding during his college career. 10,944 passing yards and 104 passing touchdowns against only 31 interceptions on 60% accuracy at A&M shows you the type of player he is.
The volume, longevity, and success as a passer is there. Glass stands tall in the pocket at six feet five inches and didn’t struggle to get the ball down the field. The physical talent is there to give the Bucs a good depth option, but there are some concerns on the athletic side.
Glass is far more of a monolith in the pocket-a trait that is dying out in the modern game. Teaching a guy to get outside of the pocket and to stay comfortable out there is not generally something that NFL teams can teach, so the Bucs would have to understand that not much is changing there if they really do like Glass.
Despite not bringing much as a rusher, that shouldn’t be much of a knock against Glass when Ryan Griffin isn’t either. Let’s be honest; that’s who this competition is between. The Bucs can take the veteran that has proven he will never do anything or a rookie that is coming off an excellent college career and is only 22-years old.
We think the answer is pretty easy if he shows anything.
The coming weeks should reveal plenty, and we are absolutely rooting for Glass to make some noise with the Buccaneers.
