"He had to drive the ball so well this week with the rough and wind conditions," head coach Doug Martin said. "If you weren't playing from the fairway, you were playing behind and defensively. Overall, the experience of playing in an NCAA championship for Sam, at an elite level with the best teams in the country, this is just a prelude for him this summer. He's got a great schedule with high-level tournaments that will challenge his game. There's nothing but positives that you can take away from this week."
For Jean, the week of pageantry was a whirlwind on and off the course. He also had the privilege to play before several family members, friends and current and former teammates.
"I was practicing at Traditions (Golf Club) and couldn't help but watch the selection show and see if I was gonna be on there," Jean said. "I was super excited and had a bunch of people call. I'm thankful for the opportunity to come out here and play these last three days. It's been a grind, and I wish I could have made a little more of it, but I have one more year, and I'll be better and more prepared next year."
Jean's appearance on the NCAA stage was the seventh for UC in its program history, as well as the fourth of Martin's tenure. Austin Squires previously made it in 2017 and 2019, while David Tepe earned a spot in 2013 that also came on the same course.
Jean, the No. 6 seed, carded a 77 and 69 on each of his first two days, the latter serving as the only Tuesday performance without a bogey out of the field's 75 golfers.
"First off, I'm real proud of Sam," assistant coach Austin Frick said. "He had a great year with five top-10s and really showed how he can develop his game, and I saw a lot of that this week. His short-game is something that really kept him in the round. We didn't have our best stuff in the first round, but we had great practice sessions after every round this week. He did a good job at letting mistakes wash off his back. Sam wants to play well and has a lot of pride in what he does, and I'm really grateful he asked me to be with him for 54 holes out here."
Thomas Giroux (Oakland) punched the individual ticket to the NCAA Championship in Arizona with a 3-under 210. The five teams to move on were Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech (co-champs), Ohio State, Arkansas and East Tennessee State.
This course also carries some personal history for Martin, who helped his Oklahoma team as a player to a second-place finish at the 1987 National Championship.
"Growing up in Ohio and being very familiar with this golf course, the chance to represent Oklahoma in 1987 was such a great experience," Martin said. "We had an unbelievable week. All five guys played at least eight years on the PGA Tour. Coming back this week and having current and former players back here, as well as administrators, makes for such a great week and experience for our program."
