No Fun's Fall Calendar Packed with Exciting Acts - Nippertown

TROY – No Fun (located at 275 River Street) is stoked to announce highlights from its fall calendar as it continues to carve out its niche as a hotspot for experimental music in the Capital Region. After six months of operation, the small venue has secured great connections and has begun booking bigger, national acts including recent sold-out shows of Gibby Haynes (of the Butthole Surfers), popular indie rock outfit Widowspeak, NYC hip hop from Homeboy Sandman, and a laundry list of  today’s best psych rock  bands like Frankie & The Witch Fingers, OneidaDeath Valley Girls, and Holy  Wave to name a few.

A Place to Bury Strangers at No Fun

“The most important thing to us is that the bands who play the space are challenging”, says August Rosa, owner and operator of No Fun. “We built this place for new experiences and continue to work hard to build trust in our programming with the hope that patrons will visit at random and discover  something truly unique.”

Additionally, the venue is excited to keep its Ticket Giveaway Tuesdays promotion going to continue to bring awareness to the broad range of genres showcased at its downtown Troy location. Keep an eye out on the venue’s social media pages @nofuntroy on Facebook / Twitter  / Instagram for a chance to win tickets to different shows each week, as well as show announcements and show photography.

This is just a shortlist of some highlights for the Fall. A typical week has four to five events, many of which are free of charge, like the weekly Super Dark Collective Thursday showcases that showcase traveling acts alongside the area’s best eccentric local bands. The full schedule can be viewed at nofuntroy.com. The venue is  committed to keeping pricing free when possible, and affordable when ticketing is necessary to limit any boundary to experiencing culture. Doors are 7 PM and show starts 8 PM for most performances.

Sat Sept 10th – Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage / Pony In The Pancake / Nathan Meltz & The House Of Tomorrow ($10 ADV / $15 Door) –  Scuzzy indie rock night headlined by the bizarre and brilliant Jeffrey Lewis. “Weird? Very… but also downright inspiring” according to Rolling Stone.

“Spread Your Head” by Spaceface

Sun Sept 11th – Spaceface / Da’an Ba’and / Stella Stella ($12 ADV / $16 Door) – Spaceface is retro-futurist dream pop with Jake Ingalls of the Flaming Lips. The live set features a psychedelic LED light show, parachutes, foam machines & more.

Fri Sept 16th – Mauskovic Dance Band / Carinae / DJ DrummerNK / Troy Samba ($10 ADV / $14 Door) – Mauskovic Dance Band is a heady, tropical blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms  and space disco, culminating in a vibrant hypnotic groove destined for bustling dance floors.  Led by Nicola Mauskovic (Altin Gün & touring drummer of legendary Zambian Rock band  W.I.T.C.H.)

Sun Sept 18th – Pink Mountaintops / Rabid  Children / DJ Hey Greasy ($14 ADV / $18 Door) Pink Mountaintops have supplied an outlet for the more arcane fascinations of Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean, whose live band includes Kliph Scurlock (drummer of Flaming Lips from 2002-2014) and Emily Rose Epstein (Ty Segall Band).

“Sunrise (Rumble)” by Medicine Singers featuring Yonatan Gat

Wed Sept 28th – Medicine Singers & Yonatan Gat with Thor Harris & Christopher Pravdica of Swans / Wax Shamu ($14 ADV / $18 Door) – The Medicine Singers perform what Pitchfork has called a “vivid new context for the sound of the powwow drum, highlighting the debt that rock music owes to Native American music”.  Their live show is the stuff of legend – the Medicine Singers set up in-the-round with the audience encircling the band, and go into a trance-inducing set where the borders between  performer and audience, as well as between psychedelic punk rock and shamanic chants, are blurred.

Fri Oct 14th – SUUNS / Yves Jarvis /  Activity ($14 ADV / $18 Door) – Montreal-based experimental rock trio Suuns blend aspects of dark electro, dissonant art rock, and plodding indie rock in a constantly shifting sound.

Fri Oct 21st – BLK JKS / Ampevene / Mike Larry Draw ($12 ADV / $16 Door) – BLK JKS celebrate 10 years of their genre-traversing Afropunk / psych /prog jams and trailblazing, award-winning debut After Robots, alongside their new album Abantu / Before Humans

Sun Oct 22nd – No Age / Godcaster / Sunbloc ($15 ADV / $20 Door) – Los Angeles duo No Age updated the spirit of early independent punk and hardcore by covering their spiky, uptempo songs with washes of textural ambient noise. In their earliest days, the pair sounded like My Bloody Valentine remixing Hüsker Dü’s initial SST output, borrowing from both the  positive-minded D.I.Y. all-ages scene they were heavily involved with in L.A., as well as healthy amounts of art world stylization. The group would walk the line between these two poles throughout their career, from flirtations with pop-friendly melodies on their 2008 full-length album Nouns to the blurred art rock of 2013’s An Object

“Live at the Chapel” by Tonstartssbandht

Tues Nov 1st – Tonstartssbandht / Patrick Holland / Bruiser & Bicycle ($10 ADV / $14 Door)  – An American psychedelic / noise-rock duo led by brothers Edwin and Andy White,  Tonstartssbandht (pronounced Tahn-starts-bandit) emerged in 2008 with a sound that employs an aural mishmash of loop-driven pop, doomy experimental blues, and nervy, improvised, and fractured lo-fi indie rock. You may recognize Andy White from shredding guitar for Mac Demarco’s band. Known for their dynamic live performances, the band began self-releasing albums shortly after forming and amassed a substantial sonic arsenal before inking a deal with Mexican Summer and issuing their official debut long-player, Sorcerer, in 2017.

Many more announcements in the coming weeks. Stay tuned with updates on the venue’s social media pages @nofuntroy on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Events are accurately listed on its website at nofuntroy.com as well.
