PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Villanova Wildcats persevere over the Quakers of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn.) in an exciting overtime comeback win.
The first half of the game was scoreless due to the great work of sophomore goalkeeper Emma Leppert who had a total of five saves between the quarters. The only shot that gave the keeper a scare was in the first quarter when Penn sent the ball into the net from behind the arch and the goal was called back.
The Quakers came out swinging making their way on the board only a couple minutes into the third quarter. Leppert and the Wildcats defense adjusted and did not allow for any more goals to enter the next, Leppert becoming a brick ball adding another three saves to the collection.
With only one quarter left of play and the rain coming down, the Wildcats needed to get on the board to stay in the game. Freshman forward #2 Toni Minichello had an incredible goal scored late in the fourth (57:15) in which she just got a stick on the ball past two defenders with the assist by junior forward #11 Meghan Mitchell. The goal sent play into overtime and gave another chance to claim the victory.
The Wildcats took control of the 7v7 overtime game and with fought their way down the field into scoring position. Sophomore midfielder #10 Anne Drabbe (with the assist) sent the ball in from the top of the arch and Mitchell dove to deflect the ball into the back of the net to end play and mark down the Wildcat win in the season record book.
The Wildcats now own a record of 4-1 on the season and look forward to their first conference game next week.
Head coach Joanie Milhous commented on the comeback and collective effort the team put in to pull out the win.
"I was really proud of our team today. Penn is very strong, and I was really happy of how we competed a full sixty-four and a half minutes," Milhous said. "We played such a solid game defensively and, in our midfield, as well. The great ball in from Anne and diving effort at the end from Meghan really summed up our determination and competitiveness from our team today."
The Wildcats continue on the road for their first BIG EAST face off against the Friars of Providence College on Sunday Sep. 16. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
