5 exciting authors coming to Portland for the 2020-21 Arts & Lectures series - OregonLive

The 36th season of Portland Arts & Lectures has been revealed, and once again, it’s a lineup to warm a bookworm’s heart.

Here are the authors, announced Thursday via livestream by Literary Arts’ director of public programs, Amanda Bullock:

Oct. 13: Helen Macdonald, author of the genre-blurring “H is For Hawk,” an eloquent memoir that’s at once a natural history and a meditation on grief.

Dec. 3: Yaa Gyasi, author of the riveting novel “Homegoing,” which tracks two half-sisters in 18th-century Ghana and their descendants through eight generations of the slave trade and its terrible legacy.

Jan. 28: Madeline Miller, author of “Circe,” a novel that casts the sorceress from “The Odyssey” into her own empowering story.

Feb. 18: Ibram X. Kendi, whose most recent book is “How to Be an Antiracist,” a compelling blend of personal history and scholarly work.

April 20: Joy Harjo, recently appointed to a second term as U.S. poet laureate. She’s published nine books of poetry, most recently “An American Sunrise.”

Subscriptions to the 2020-21 series, which start at $90, are on sale now. If you’re interested, don’t delay: Literary Arts’ executive director, Andrew Proctor, told The Oregonian/OregonLive recently that the nonprofit had already sold a thousand subscriptions for next season. The series takes place at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, which holds about 2,770 people.

In the event that a talk cannot be held safely, Proctor said Thursday, it’ll be rescheduled and all tickets will be honored. If a talk cannot be rescheduled, it will be converted to a virtual event.

The 2019-20 Portland Arts & Lectures series shut down before its final event, scheduled for May 5, featuring Colson Whitehead, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novels “The Underground Railroad” and “The Nickel Boys.” Whitehead’s appearance has been rescheduled to May 5, 2021, but will still be considered part of the 2019-20 series, which is sold out.
