To the editor:
The 3-screen art cinema proposal for downtown Midland (220 W.Main) - by Mike Hayes and David Ramaker - could also be ground zero for an annual mid-states film festival.
Midland, due to our long, deep history of art, music and theater, is better positioned to host a regional film festival than most cities.
John Newby's current series "Main Street" talks at length of tourism dollars. Film buffs who follow the film festival circuit usually have money.
This plan for three theaters of 125, 75 and 50 seats would do nicely for a festival start. We already show cinema at Ace Hardware's parking lot upon the east wall. That would provide four screens.
A proposal made at the launch of the Bay City film festival a decade ago (now on pause) was that the filmmakers keep their box office money to support themselves and to attract other filmmakers, and the theaters keep the concession popcorn and candy money, often the bigger amount.
An art cinema for downtown Midland is an exciting idea.
Just imagine the exterior marquee lighting up downtown.
The guy who designed the State Theater re-build, Eric E. Larsen, would love to get his hands on that one, I would bet.
