Niani Patterson kept a Mother’s Day tradition alive this year.
Just as she did in 2019, the Passaic native ordered a platter of treats for her mom from Edible Arrangements in Clifton. But unlike last year, she was shocked to see such a long line when she went to pick it up Sunday morning.
“I was the last person in line and then it kept continuously growing and growing,” said Patterson, noting that there were at least 50 other people in line with her. “There’s no parking lot, so everyone was double parked.”
There were at least 11 employees working to fulfill or deliver orders at the Clifton shop, Patterson told NJ Advance Media.
Still the sheer chaos of the moment is more evidence that these are not normal times — a tangible glimpse at how even Mother’s Day has been reshaped by the coronavirus.
“Last year I was in and out,” Patterson said.
She chose Edible Arrangements again because it felt like the safe bet in a world riddled by COVID-19: convenient, safe and tasty. But Patterson ended up waiting more than 45 minutes to receive her order, as those in line attempted to keep six feet of distance from one another.
This appeared to be the the same at some other Edible Arrangement locations in New Jersey and across the nation.
One Twitter user posted about encountering long lines later in the day at another Edible Arrangements store just a few miles away in Rutherford.
“Waiting in line for (an) hour for my mothers day gift ... thanks, what the point of a pick up time,” the post said.
This was the scene in Woburn, Massachusetts Sunday, where some Twitter users said the cops were called after crowds gathered outside the store, hardly social distancing.
NJ Advance Media reached out to Edible Arrangements for comment.
