FUNDRAISING FOR THE indoor practice facility at Washington State has reached the halfway point, WSU President Kirk Schulz tells Cougfan.com. On the broader topic of fundraising in the age of coronavirus, Schulz also said WSU will announce “some pretty exciting gift announcements” for both athletics and academics over the next couple of weeks.
Schulz said he didn’t have the exact dollar amount raised for the new IPF-- but at a projected cost of $21 million, being "halfway there" would mean WSU has raised roughly $10.5 million -- approximately $2.5 million more than last fall when AD Pat Chun offered an update to a luncheon gathering of boosters. Watch the video for what Schulz said about the IPF.
Schulz, who had previously targeted this June as the goal for shovels in the ground emphasized that 100 percent of the $21 million will need to be raised and/or pledged before construction can begin.
“We need to have cash in the door, and/or signed pledges over a five-year pledge period that equal the complete cost of the project. That’s what we put in place when I got here as president, that’s the way we’re going to have to operate in the future,” said Schulz.
The new indoor practice facility has been on WSU's to-do list for a decade, since before Schulz arrived to WSU in June 2016. The estimated price tag has decreased over the last two years, down from $28 million originally. Regardless, a new IPF is critical to maintaining WSU’s competitiveness in the Pac-12, and on the national stage. The facility would be used by virtually all of WSU's sports teams, but is especially important to football.
Schulz said he’s “as eager as anyone to get that started and to do a ribbon cutting” on the IPF, but also emphasized the need to be fiscally prudent.
SCHULZ SAID despite COVID-19, fundraising at WSU has not slowed down – and that Washington State will be making major gift announcements this month for both athletics and academics. Watch the video:
Schulz noted that season ticket sales and Cougar Athletic Fund donations have seen a slight decrease with COVID-19 dominating life in America. But he also said WSU fundraising is ahead of where it was last year at this time, and June (the last month of the fiscal year) is always a strong fundraising month.
“In May, we’re going to announce a couple very nice gifts to WSU -- some are going to be with athletics, some are going to be with academics,” Schulz said. “But we’ve got several major gift announcements lined up … I would expect that in the next two weeks you’ll hear some pretty exciting gift announcements coming out of the foundation and in some of our meetings coming up,” Schulz said.
Of note: Schulz said that while nothing is set in stone, he can envision Cougar football practices ramping up in July. Click here to learn more.

NOTABLE NOTE: The new indoor practice facility is expected to accommodate two 50-yard football fields, with a side area for training, locker rooms, offices and a track. It also would be climate controlled in a state-of-the-art way so coaches can mimic the weather of their next destination. And, unlike the current IPF, it would be fully lit and feature joint-friendly Field Turf.
