Which Detroit Lions training camp battle will be the most exciting? - prideofdetroit.com

This week, the NFL and NFL Players Association have been talking at length to try and get training camp started on time. While plenty of issues and details remain unsolved, progress is being made and it appears the NFL is hell-bent on staying on schedule.

If they’re able to work out the fine print with the players, that means we’re less than two weeks away from the start of camp. So, for the purposes of hypotheticals, let’s just assume they get it done—yes, a big assumption, but bear with me.

The Detroit Lions have a ton of intriguing stories for training camp. How early will Jeff Okudah, the third overall pick, take over a starting role, and how quickly will he look like he belongs? What the heck is the Lions’ offensive line going to look like? Just how good are players like Jamie Collins Sr. and Danny Shelton, and will they be able to turn the defense around right away? D’Andre Swift or Kerryon Johnson?

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Which training camp battle is the most exciting?

My answer: I’ll talk about it more later on Saturday, but I’m most interested in the offensive line. We already know what is happening at both tackle positions and at center, but both starting guard positions are up for grabs.

The Lions may already have a pretty good idea of what they’re going to do, but because we didn’t have OTAs nor minicamp, we don’t know exactly what that is yet.

With former right guard Graham Glasgow now in Denver, will third-round rookie Jonah Jackson take over there? Jackson played right guard at Rutgers, but when he transferred to Ohio State, he played left guard.

It seems likely Jackson will take one of the starting roles, although the shortened offseason may force the Lions to start with their veterans. Does that mean Joe Dahl sticks at left guard to start while Kenny Wiggins becomes the full-time right guard?

And what about the Lions’ other mid-round rookie, Logan Stenberg? At Kentucky, Stenberg didn’t have to pass protect much in a run-heavy offense, so it may take longer for him to challenge for a starting job, but his mean streak is exactly what the Lions are looking for at the guard position.

Of all the positions on the Lions, the guard position may be the least clear right now, and that could make for an exciting training camp... as long as we actually get one.

Your turn.
