Cody Newman is definitely a singer to look out for. At just 15 years old, Newman can already write impressive songs and play 5 instruments. It is not surprising, then, that her talent has earned praise from several executives in the music industry.
Newman released her first EP, End of Infinity, in the fall of 2019, and now she has returned with a new single called “Palo Alto.” Showbiz Cheat Sheet recently sat down with Newman over Zoom to discuss her latest song and find out more about this rising star.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: What have you been up to during the pandemic?
Cody Newman: I’ve been writing quite a bit, and I’ve been in the studio producing new music that will come out soon. My first single coming out on Sept. 18, “Palo Alto,” is the most recent one. I’m very excited to be sharing that with the world.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Have you also picked up any new hobbies recently?
Cody Newman: Yeah, I’ve taken up gardening! I have quite a few succulents—I think four or five now. I just keep adding on. And painting! I’ve been doing a lot of art as well.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Let’s talk about your new song, “Palo Alto.” It’s a catchy pop rock song with very interesting lyrics. Can you tell me more about it? What inspired you to write it?
Cody Newman: I wrote it with a friend of mine, William Bryant. We were watching a movie, and it mentioned Palo Alto in it. I immediately had an idea, “Hey, we should write a song about this place.” I had never heard of Palo Alto before, which was funny because it’s in California and very popular. That’s where the idea struck, and I kind of went from there. I wanted it to have a chase scene kind of vibe. That’s what I felt when I was writing it—what would happen if I was on a train and there were bandits following me on a train.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: You’ve also accomplished quite a bit at this age. Your song was one of the most requested songs on Radio Disney several months ago, and KIIS FM LA also named you a Next Up Artist. Do you have any other goals for your career going forward?
Cody Newman: Once COVID starts becoming less of a problem in our society and things start getting better, I would love to perform around popular venues—if not just in the U.S.—around the world.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: I’ve read that you can play the guitar, piano, ukulele, violin, and drums. What made you want to learn these instruments?
Cody Newman: I’ve always been very interested in learning everything in a single subject. I feel like branching out and being able to do a little bit of everything helps me in my daily life, too.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Are there any other instruments you would like to learn?
Cody Newman: I would love to learn cello. I know it’s very similar to violin, but the playing is totally different. And electric bass as well. I kind of know it, but I’m not that great at it. I would love to be better at it.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: You said that you like art, like painting. I’ve read that you like photography as well. Do you have plans to also showcase your art?
Cody Newman: That would be super fun! I think it’s really just a hobby, though. I have no future plans of showcasing any of my art, but merchandise-wise, I have started to design my own merch. And maybe on one of my albums, I will showcase some of my art.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet: What are your plans post-pandemic?
Cody Newman: My booking agent is Mark Cheatham, and I know that he has some stuff set up for whenever this pandemic clears up, but we do not have any intact plans yet.
