Six months after it was originally slated to premiere in theaters, Mulan is finally here. Today, Disney’s live-action adaptation debuted on Disney+ Premier Access, a new add-on that enables viewers to purchase the film for $30. Despite the steep price tag, Disney die-hards flocked to the film, and many have already published their official reviews on Twitter. The verdict? “So worth the wait,” wrote one particularly passionate fan. “Everything was perfect.”
Directed by Niko Caro, Disney’s Mulan recreates the epic tale of Chinese warrior Mulan (Liu Yifei), a fearless young woman who risks everything to fight for her country and family. When Mulan’s aging father (Tzi Ma) is called to war, the young warrior disguises herself as a man and comes into her own as a warrior in an epic tale of bravery, perseverance, and duty.
Unlike the 1998 animated classic, the live-action Mulan does not feature Mushu the dragon, Li Shang, or beloved song “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” However, the reboot more than makes up for it with bad ass fight scenes, stunning visuals, and a new phoenix sidekick. As Decider film critic Anna Menta writes, Mulan is an “epic, breathtaking adventure that more than justifies its existence.”
Mulan viewers seem to agree. Twitter is filled with reactions from fans who tuned in right at midnight to watch the Disney+ Premier Access flick, and they praised its updated take on the classic. “Just finished watching Mulan and it was amazing watching an Asian woman kicking ass!” wrote one viewer. “It’s not just great. It’s amazing. It’s faultless,” added another.
Of course, many felt that $30 was simply too much to pay for Mulan, as they are already paying $6.99 per month for Disney+. “Imagine having a Disney Plus membership and still paying 30 bucks to watch Mulan,” wrote one critic. “Disney Plus is out of their rabbit ass mind to even remotely think I’m about to pay $30 to watch Mulan,” added another. Plus, as many noted, Mulan will begin streaming for free on December 4, so Disney+ viewers will only have to wait a few months for the paywall to the lifted.
