Christmas in the Commons has exciting opening weekend - The Herald-News

New Lenox's Christmas in the Commons is finally here after it kicked off the holiday season with its lighting ceremony.

The village took many steps to ensure visitors' safety, including modified pictures with Santa which involve him sitting behind Plexiglas at his work bench and only one group allowed in at a time, hot chocolate sold at the concession stand rather than under a tent, and plenty of space between holiday market and food vendors.

Most people wore masks, too, and kept their distance from other groups.

"It's great to see all of you," Mayor Tim Baldermann said in his speech. "This has been a tough year but we certainly appreciate how the community has come together. Although we need to be safe, we need to still enjoy our lives and enjoy our holidays."

In years past, children from more than 60 communities dropped a letter into Santa's mailbox. This year, Hudson Jager, a child from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, will be getting a personal letter written back, just as all children do.

The Jager family was there visiting extended family and this is the first time they have attended the event.

"It’s beautiful and awesome," Jesse Jager, Hudson's mother, said. "It's nice weather for it too and its more manageable for the children than being in the freezing cold.

"They're at such a fun age where they love doing the decorating and doing all the things and they are having fun," Jesse Jager said. "It's fun to watch them and how excited they are to see the lights and they go 'wow look at that.'"

The lights are on every night, but the events only happen on Saturday and Sunday.
