Johnson excited about quarterbacks next year - 247Sports

Nobody could have seen the year coming that Kyle Trask had in 2020. The Heisman trophy finalist has thrown for 4,135 yards, 43 touchdowns, and just five interceptions on the season. He’s led the Gators to the brink of an SEC Championship and berth in what would have been their first College Football Playoffs. Trask will be moving on after the Cotton Bowl, but Florida offensive coordinator Brian Johnson is excited for what the future holds in his quarterback room.

It seems rather unlikely that a quarterback like Trask would have been as successful as he has been in a Dan Mullen/ Brian Johnson offense given his skill set and really lack of pure running ability. That just shows how good Trask is at doing what he does, but also how good the staff is at being able to adjust to a pure pocket passer and do as well as they have done.

But next year promises to be different. We’ve seen a good bit of redshirt sophomore Emory Jones at quarterback. We know he can run the ball and is a ‘better fit’ for the offense. The added dimension of a quarterback in the offense that can run automatically improves the running game because your offense becomes plus-one with blockers. And Jones is a gifted runner.

But we have also seen Jones throw the ball. He’s got a cannon. He may need to further work on his touch, but he can throw the ball and hit his target from distance.

We’ve seen much less of true freshman Anthony Richardson, but he possesses the same kind of tools Jones has, we just don’t know to what extent.

Those two guys have Johnson feeling excited about the future.

“I mean, we have a lot of great players on offense,” Johnson said when asked who he could talk about who on offense we haven’t seen much of but are ready to show off next year. “It’s hard to single anybody out. The guy who hasn’t played as much, obviously, is Emory. I can’t say enough about what he’s meant to me for the last three years, the chance to get to work with him every single day in practice and see how much better he gets each and every year. I’m really excited for him.”

“I’m really excited for Anthony. Those two guys specifically in my room, I think they’ve got an opportunity to learn a lot by watching Kyle this year, how he prepares and how he performs and the habits he has throughout the week to get himself ready to play. You know, we’ve got a lot of good young players here that are eager for an opportunity to get out on the field and show what they can do.”

And as much as Johnson and Mullen would like to get Jones ready for next season by rolling him out there to play a ton against Oklahoma, he says this team has one purpose Wednesday.

“I think, first and foremost, the object of the game plan is to give us the best opportunity to go win the football game,” Johnson said. “Make no mistake about it – in a bowl game, we’re there for one reason, and that's to win the game. We'll put together a great plan that highlights all of our players’ talents and put them in a position to go be successful when they get out there on the field. Make no mistake about it, job one, first and foremost, is to go out there and give yourself a chance to go win the game.”

So the time is coming for Jones and Richardson. Jones will likely see the field Wednesday as he has in most games this year, but for now we will have to wait and see just how well he can operate in this system when he is the man at quarterback.

Florida and Oklahoma meet up Wednesday, December 30, at 8 p.m. in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and the game will be aired on ESPN.
