Knicks rookies' home debut will likely have to wait - New York Post

Bah Humbug.

The two rookies probably won’t make their home Knicks debuts Saturday against the Sixers.

Forward Obi Toppin has a hurting calf, and point guard Immanuel Quickley is still nursing a hip pointer, leaving both doubtful for the Garden opener on the injury report released Friday. The Knicks also face the Bucks on Sunday, and their status could be in jeopardy for that game, too.

Quickley injured his hip after getting checked by Indiana’s Myles Turner late in the first half in Wednesday’s opener. He missed the second half, when they were outscored 60-41, and his absence was felt when the Knicks didn’t get good point guard play.

Quickley, a projected second-round pick but taken 25th out of Kentucky, fast became a fan favorite with his electric play in the final two preseason games, including netting 22 points and five assists when he started the preseason finale against Cleveland.

Another sports streak will be broken because of the pandemic.

Legendary Garden photographer George Kalinsky will miss his first Knicks home opener in 54 years Saturday because of safety protocols regarding COVID-19.

Kalinsky, who 50 years ago snapped the iconic shot of Wills Reed hobbling out of the tunnel before Game 7 of the NBA Finals, is shelved until further notice — along with Knicks fans.

The Garden didn’t allow media for the preseason but are following NBA rules and will permit a limited number of rotating media members for home games. Those permitted are required to get tested for COVID-19 upon entry 3 ¹/₂ hours before tipoff.

The MSG Network broadcasting crew will be on hand. Mike Breen and Walt Frazier will sit up several rows in the stands and not in their normal courtside location. MSG Network is broadcasting road games from a New York studio.

Sideline reporter Rebecca Haarlow is only doing home games but she’s no longer on the sidelines. She’s conducting the traditional postgame walk-off interview from the stands in a headset.
