Raleigh, N.C. — A federal advisory panel approved two phases on Sunday for the coronavirus vaccine rollout.
The next group, known as "1B," includes 49 million people that are 75 or older and front-line essential workers, like teachers, grocery store employees and first responders.
Essential front-line workers risk their lives to care for those most in need, including coronavirus patients.
The assistant chief of community outreach for Wake County EMS said the vaccine can't get here fast enough.
"Exciting and a relief," described Jeffrey Hammerstein about the new developments regarding the vaccine.
"We want it ASAP," he added. "Every day, we are responding to people that are COVID-positive, that may be COVID-positive, and we have to keep our teams of EMS staff healthy and able to continue to respond."
This week, North Carolina expects to receive more than 61,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and nearly 176,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. The state will allocate 96,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine for long-term care facilities.
Jayne Kearney, whose mother lived in a nursing home but passed away over the summer, said this vaccine provides a sense of relief for both health care workers and residents.
"They are the ones that are the most isolated. They are in a confined space. They are being cared for by workers who are going room to room," described Kearney.
Hammerstein said he’s pleased to see the importance of front-line workers recognized by making them among the first to get vaccinated.
"It's important that the EMS part of this process stays intact and stays healthy, and so, the sooner we can get it and get vaccinated, the better for everyone as well," he said.
The next group after 1B will be 1C, which includes those above 64 years old and those above 16 who have high-risk medical conditions. Other essential workers, like those in food service, could be vaccinated in this group too.
