Every year, at the beginning of December, SJR takes part in the huge fundraiser of “Giving BBYO Day.” Giving BBYO Day is an International campaign, held all across BBYO, similar to a text-a-thon, to help raise money for BBYO. It occurs every year following Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend and allows us to reach out to community members for donations. These community members help make sure South Jersey Region is able to continue functioning at the highest capacity. Regional Gizborit (treasurer) Lily Cohen says that she “had a great time at our first virtual convention of the year, and the funds raised from #givingbbyoday can help make sure our next event is even better.”
Teens from all over the world have signed up to be “Giving BBYO Day Ambassadors,” and SJR has 32 teen ambassadors so far. Each of these ambassadors has their own donation page to get funds for the region. Last year, South Jersey Region exceeded our goal of $6,500 by raising $6,944, and teens are hoping to raise even more this December! With these funds, SJR is also able to provide scholarships to local teens, which help them pay for regional events and conventions. While Giving BBYO Day is officially on December 1, donations are appreciated throughout all of December. Go to tinyurl.com/sjrgiving/ if you are interested in making a donation and helping SJR reach its goals.
Another exciting event coming up in South Jersey Region is Global Shabbat, taking place on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. Global Shabbat is a worldwide Shabbat experience with Holocaust survivors, business professionals, faith leaders, cross-cultural activists, politicians, and entrepreneurs joining AZAs and BBGs. BBYO communities all around the world will be welcoming Shabbat together with teen-led services and meaningful programming.
“All are welcome to join our Friday Night Virtual Shabbat Celebration plus candle lighting to celebrate Chanukah,” SJR’s Regional Vice President of Judaics, Joe Hochberg said. The service is open to the community, and will be followed by SJR chapters planning Judaic-focused and Israel-focused chapter programs, discussing their Stand Up and Speak Up causes. There will be a professional song leader and great experiences! Both board members and teens who are planning Global Shabbat are very excited to create a platform for regional members to see each other, as well as connecting to the rest of the South Jersey community.
Following Global Shabbat, SJR is hosting an event at Topgolf in Mount Laurel. Teens going to this event are super excited to see their friends, as we are hosting in person, following COVID safety guidelines. This event is open to all prospects, new members, summer 2021 registrants, and teens who bring new members into the region. SJR is excited to bring new faces and old friends back together after being strictly virtual for a majority of this year. More information will be released soon regarding the Topgolf event on December 20, but contact sjr@bbyo.org with any questions.
