PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Don’t Wait, Vaccinate. It’s the call of every hospital in Aroostook county to make sure people are getting their COVID-19 vaccines.

“You can see something on the national news or read something on the web but we really wanted it to be local, and your trusted friends and your trusted neighbors,” said Sherry Locke, director of advancement for ACAP.

The Don’t Wait, Vaccinate campaign aims to get people, especially those under 50, in touch with medical professionals so that they can feel safe and assured getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

ACAP was already working on the campaign when they joined forces with County hospitals.

“We felt it would be a good use of our collaborative efforts, the four hospitals and Hebert pharmacy, and I was aware that ACAP was working on this Don’t Wait Vaccinate campaign, so we talked about it as a collaboration between the hospitals and said hey why don’t we reach out to ACAP,” said Karen Gonya, communications manager, AR Gould.

Every county hospital is involved in the campaign to get Aroostook’s questions answered. Local faces will be showing up in the campaign to explain why they got vaccinated—for their business, for their families, for their neighbors.

“We’re really in hopes that the stories being shared by the local people will inspire others,” said Ellen Bartlett, HRH’s public information officer.

“I’ve been here 42 years and I can never remember a time that was more difficult for my staff...if everyone gets vaccinated that makes it a lot easier for anyone working in the health care sector,” said Bill Flagg, director of community relations and development, Cary.

“A state wide effort is great and we encourage it and want to be involved in it but Aroostook county has always been just a little more removed from the rest of the state so we wanted to make sure that those messages that need to be hyper local and hyper personal were actually that for Aroostook county, and even in Aroostook county we have three different regions, northern central, and southern, each with their own culture and community feel,” said Monica Jerkins, NMMC.

The Don’t Wait, Vaccinate campaign will be on social media, radio, and here on WAGM, but you can always directly contact your own primary care doctor for information about the vaccine.

On June 8 we will be hosting an hour long question and answer forum on WAGM. We are inviting the public to send any questions you have about the vaccine to us through Facebook or email at WAGM-news@gray.tv
