Science Day features exciting experiments - Garden City News

Garden City’s Stewart and Stratford elementary schools each held their own Fifth Grade Science Day events that featured an assortment of workshops. This annual experience typically brings both buildings together, and while that was not possible this year due to the pandemic, teachers from the two schools made sure that their students had many opportunities to engage in a variety of hands-on STEAM activities that inspired creativity, innovation, collaboration and discovery.

Stewart’s event was organized by teachers Destiny Braddick and Barrie Dratch, while that at Stratford was coordinated by teacher Laura Connolly with assistance from teaching assistants Cassie Pensa and Ali Wiener.

Fifth grade teachers facilitated the outdoor stations that classes rotated among. Students had opportunities to design terrariums, test out bottle rockets using baking soda, build straw bridges and construct durable packaging for an egg drop. They planned, experimented and explored using science concepts that they have learned throughout the school year.
