It took all but four plays for Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields to make his NFL regular season debut. The No. 11 overall pick completed a 9-yard pass to Marquise Goodwin. Fields was ushered back to the sideline after his completion, however, as Andy Dalton ended the drive with an interception in the end zone on a pass intended for Darnell Mooney.
Bears fans openly lobbied for Fields to be the team's Week 1 starter following an impressive preseason. Dalton, who signed with the Bears with the idea that he would be the team's starting quarterback, recently said that he has done his best to block out the outside noise.
"That's the worst thing you can do is look over your shoulder," Dalton said, via Jon Greenberg of The Athletic. "So I think understanding that is key. We're talking about tuning out the stuff you don't need to focus on and knowing where you need to put your time and effort and all that kind of stuff. I think that's just where I'm at. You don't worry about all the other stuff."
While Dalton is the starter, it's clear that Fields will get opportunities to show what he can do albeit on a limited basis. Fields became the fifth rookie quarterback to play during Week 1, joining classmates Mac Jones, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Trevor Lawrence.
