Aston Villa will be without key midfielder Marvelous Nakamba for their trip to Norwich on Tuesday.
In his pre-match press conference, Villa boss Steven Gerrard also confirmed the club are awaiting further COVID-19 test results.
Two players have already tested positive for the virus and will miss the game at Carrow Road.
Nakamba was substituted during Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday with what at first was understood to be a groin problem. However, Gerrard confirmed Nakamba’s injury is worse than they thought.
Gerrard said: “We sent him for an MRI scan and the news that has come back is not good news.
“The idea is to send him to a specialist on Tuesday and we’ll then know more about the damage and what we’ll need to do going forward.”
Gerrard also provided an update on Villa’s COVID-19 situation after a recovery session was cancelled on Sunday.
“We’ve got a couple of (positive) cases on the playing side and we’ve got a couple of cases on the staff side.
“Due to medical confidentiality, I’m obviously not going to reveal names but, yeah, that’s not what we wanted.”
Villa could be impacted by further COVID-19 results within the next 24 hours as they await results.
Gerrard, however, did reassure that his players are taking the right steps with strict testing and set to receive booster jabs in the weeks ahead.
“From a managerial situation, we have to adapt and deal with the current situation which means sometimes you can't name squads and teams, because during the testing process, there could be positive or negative tests. We have to be ready to adapt.”
Villa take on Norwich, led by their former manager Dean Smith, on Tuesday evening.
