Volleyball Wins Exciting Battle With West Virginia State - Wheeling University Athletics

Wheeling, W. Va. – After hitting the road on Tuesday, the Wheeling University Volleyball team (15-7, 8-1) returned to the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Friday. They hosted West Virginia State in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play and picked up an exciting 3-1 win. It was a big bounce back for the Cardinals as they get back in the win column to begin the final three weeks of the season.

The Yellow Jackets took an early lead in set one, but the Cardinals rallied back, scoring six of the next seven points to take a 6-3 lead. West Virginia State got to within two points of the Cardinals in the set, until an attack error put the ball back in Wheeling's court. They would take advantage, going on a 10-0 run to take a 17-5 lead late in the set. A brigade of Yellow Jacket attack errors fuled the run and Lexi Smith and Riley Kindall would each add kills during the run. Wheeling continued to hold their lead until the set reached set point for the Cardinals at 24-11. However, West Virginia State would keep the match alive scoring three straight points to make it 24 - 14. That is as close as they would get as Tylah Yeomans knocked down a kill to give Wheeling the 25-14 set one win.

West Virginia State would also score the first point in set two, but once again Wheeling found themselves out in front 6-3. However, the Cardinals were unable to go on a big run like they did in set one and had a back and forth battle until the score sat at 11-10 in favor of Wheeling. The Cardinals were able to hold that lead until late in the set when they led 20-18. West Virginia State would end up scoring four of the next six points and tied the set at 22-22. The team's traded points to make it 23-23 before Yeomans hit her stride again. She knocked down a kill to make it set point wheeling, and added another kill to end the set with the Cardinals picking up a 25-23 win. Yeomans had ended both sets with a kill and the Cardinals were looking to sweep the match against their rivals from the MEC South.

Set three was the most competitive of the four sets with neither team able to gain an advantage. This time, it would be West Virginia State who got out to the 6-3 lead, but wheeling fought back to make it a 10-9 set early on. The yellow jackets would then score eight of the next 10 points and extended their lead to 17-12 in the late going. Head coach Christy Benner would then sub in Aly Finch and it turned out to be the right move. Upon entering the game Finch knocked down four kills in the first five points and Wheeling sat behind by one late in the set. However, It wasn't enough as the yellow jackets went on to win the set 25-23 and make the match 2-1 in favor of Wheeling. With new life, the Cardinals looked to shut down West Virginia State as they headed to set four.

As they did in the first two sets, Wheeling took the early lead at 6-3 through the first nine points. The yellow jackets battled back to make it a 7-7 set and the back and forth would continue. Neither team was able to get more than a five-point advantage and late in the set wheeling would hold a 20-16 lead. West Virginia State would come back scoring five of the next seven points and all of a sudden it was 22-21 late in set four. Wheeling brought the set to set point at 24-22 and once again Yeomans knocked down the sets final kill as wheeling won 25-22 and won the match 3-1.

It was a big day for Yeomans who led the way with 20 kills while hitting .356 on the night. She was one of three Cardinals to finish with double digit kills as Allonda Watkins and Mady Winters had 14 and 11 kills respectively. Karly Niesen added 55 assists and a kill of her own to round out the offense. On defense, Reagan Rosi and Melia Gorrell led the way with 13 digs each while Chylyn Pate picked up 11. The Cardinals improved to 8-1 in MEC play and look to carry their momentum into the final three weeks of the regular season.

The Wheeling University volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, October 18th when they host Fairmont State with tip off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
