TOWSON, MD. - The Villanova Wildcats had a huge comeback victory over the Tigers of Towson University in overtime play.
The first quarter was taken over by the Tigers as they had solid possession on the ball and control of the field. They quickly scored early in the first quarter and continued with their momentum and took that energy into the second quarter.
Only three minutes into the second quarter did the Tigers converted a goal off a corner. The Wildcats just needed some time to find their rhythm and once drew some corners and had more control of the pace of the game. #3 Maggie Mick took a big shot off a corner (23:16) to get the Wildcats on the board assisted by #10 Anne Drabbe. The Tigers drew multiple green cards in the quarter two, giving the wildcats an advantage. The Wildcats stayed on the attack, capitalizing on their numbers, and drew another corner in which produced another goal this time from #22 Makenna Maguire (25:56) assisted again by Drabbe. Towson answered back with one last goal to end the half with Villanova trailing by one.
The third quarter was much more Wildcat dominated as they had clear control over the field and ball drawing numerous corners and taking a lot of shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper #9 Claire Borman was tapped in for sophomore goalkeeper #15 Emma Leppert. The Towson goalkeeper was playing very strong, and the Wildcats were just not able to sneak the ball past her. Despite the score, the Wildcats were on the attack the entire quarter showing the Tigers that they will not back down. The quarter remained scoreless, but the Wildcats won the quarter over the Tigers having the 5-0 advantage for shots on goal and 4-1 advantage in corners.
The Wildcats continued their relentless attack trying to pull out a win or force overtime. The Wildcats continued to take many shots on goal and drew some corners to try to get another goal on the board. A huge goal scored by #14 Sabine de Ruijter to tie the game with less than three minutes on the board assisted by #25 Raina Smolij and Maguire. The Wildcats ran time out on the clock and force the game into overtime.
With the end of regulation play, overtime consists of a 10-minute 7v7 face off, whoever scores first wins. Due to #33 Hannah Barsky drawing a yellow card with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats had to play with a man down for the first four minutes of overtime. Borman, the goalkeeper, had a huge save right off the bat keeping the Wildcats in it. The junior forward #11 Meghan Mitchell drew a penalty stroke for the team at the 62:53 mark. De Ruijter took the shot for Villanova and sent the ball into the back of the goal to end the thrilling competition and add to the win column for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats travel to CT to take on the Huskies of the University of Connecticut for a BIG EAST conference face off on Friday Oct. 14. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
