When the novelty of the XFL’s new rules wore off, the league was always going to struggle with keeping fans interested in football games with no story lines or drama whatsoever. And that’s been evident with the league’s declining TV ratings.

But on Sunday, the XFL didn’t have to look towards the product on the field for some excitement. The fans at the DC Defenders’ home game against the St. Louis BattleHawks at Audi Field had that covered.

During the game, the fans formed a massive, section-long beer snake out of plastic cups. Seriously, it was an engineering feat, and it unfolded right there in the stands. The thing was huge.

The beer snake provided such intrigue and drama that even XFL commissioner Oliver Luck brought a cup to contribute. Roger Goodell would never.

All-caps tweets and beer snakes aside, the actual game was pretty abysmal with DC winning, 15-6, on 256 yards of total offense.

The football is bad, but the XFL’s beer snake game is elite.
