Events at NM ski areas bring the current season to an exciting finale - Albuquerque Journal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As another successful skiing season winds down, area resorts are gearing up for a few final, creative hurrahs designed to send things off on fun notes.

At Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort, the next two weekends are special affairs, beginning with the 17th Cardboard Derby on Sunday, March 15.

“People build their own vessels, using only cardboard, duct tape, twine, string and paint,” said Ian McPherson, Sipapu marketing coordinator. “Then they race down this chute that we create at Sipapu and can win different prizes.”

It’s all a part of the way to close the season a in memorable fashion.

“We’re always looking for more things to do this time of year,” McPherson said. “It’s during spring break, so we have a lot of college kids out.”

Red River Ski Area will close March 22 and will ring out the season with a Pond Skim at the base of the Platinum Chair and with the best viewing from the Lift House. The evening prior will be the final Torchlight Parade and Fireworks of the season. (Reid Weimer/Red River Ski Area)

The Cardboard Derby “is fun to participate in but also super-fun to watch,” McPherson said. “There are some wipeouts, and people come up with some spectacularly creative floats. Last year, one of our winners was a group of people that made a float that looks like they built Flintstones car. Some other people built an airplane. Another group of people who come out every year made a massive dinosaur one year. There are some really talented artists who come out.”

The chute is built from all the excess at the base of the ski runs, and that is then transformed into a man-made pond suitable for skimming across for those brave enough to give it a whirl, McPherson said of the March 21 pond skimming event.

“It’s a 75-foot long pool, 3 feet deep and filled with freezing cold river water that skiers and snowboarders try to make it across,” he said. “We try to judge who has the best run. And people do some sweet tricks. They’ll try to hop out and do a 360 or a 180. It’s really cool to watch. And we get some sweet wipeouts.”

At Ski Santa Fe, the Gladfelter Memorial Bump Run is on March 28 and Rail Jam on March 29, all as a prelude to the Slush Cup competition on the last Saturday of the season, which will be either April 4 or April 11, said Stephen Trask, marketing director.

The Gladfelter is a bump run competition in which competitors are judged on style. It has been running for many years, in memory of Jeff Gladfelter, Trask said. And the Rail Jam is a freestyle competition in which skiers and snowboarders compete with their best tricks.

At Angel Fire Resort, it’s all about careering down the mountain in atypical fashion.

The Chile Bike Challenge hits the slopes March 21, as a send-off to winter and a greeting to the cycling season.

“It’s a bike race that starts on the top of the mountain, and you race down the ski runs, said Patrick West, manager of the Angel Fire Bike Park.

Pretty much any type of bike is accepted except for those with spikes on the tires, he said.

“We’re very loose on the rules,” West said. “And they have a lot better control than you would imagine. It’s a little bit warmer, more slushy. Even on the steep slopes, they’re pretty much in control. More control than a lot of skiers.”
