The selection of Antonio Gibson could pay off in a major way for the Washington Redskins.
The Washington Redskins made the easy choice of taking Chase Young with the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Young is a dynamic edge rusher who was near consensus as the top overall prospect in the class. As great as the Young selection was, I want to dig into the second player that the Redskins brought into the mix, running back Antonio Gibson.
Gibson is listed as a running back but played much more as a slot receiver through his two years at Memphis. This kind of versatility makes him such an exciting offensive weapon for this team going forward. Make no mistake, Gibson has a ton of upside and value to this offense in both the short and long-term.
Gibson is an extremely quick and elusive player in the open field who changes directions well and has great natural instincts with the ball in his hands. Gibson also shows tremendous burst through the hole and the breakaway speed to take it to the house from anywhere on the field.
With this quick description of Gibson, you are probably envisioning a quick little scatback who can evade some tacklers with his elusiveness but will likely always go down on the first contact. That is absolutely not the case. Gibson stands 6-foot, 228 pounds and has a ton of natural power in his lower half. He is a tough runner who is always looking for extra yards and also shows tremendous natural contact balance.
Gibson has a special combination of speed, power and elusiveness that makes him a threat with the ball in his hands at all times. Add in his obvious ability as a receiver out of the backfield and you have an extremely exciting offensive weapon who could quickly become a massive playmaker at the next level.
Expect the Washington Redskins to use Gibson in a variety of roles early in his career, putting him in comfortable situations to succeed as he learns an NFL offense. However, if he can quickly adapt to the running back position after primarily playing in the slot in college, look out because there is no limit to his upside in this offense.
Give Washington credit for seeing the potential in a guy like Gibson. Many teams likely looked at his lack of an obvious position as a negative. Instead, the Washington Redskins embraced his versatility and are ready to make him a dynamic weapon for them on the offensive side of the ball. Snagging him early in the third round was a fantastic pick that could quickly pay off in a big way for this team.
