Five exciting NFL matchups in the 2020 season - PennLive

NFL schedules were released Thursday night, and there is plenty to be excited about for the matchup dates revealed.

There’s going to be clashes of future Hall of Fame quarterbacks, and others between up-and-coming stars. Some should feature battles between recent top draft picks and others will be coaches returning to their old stomping grounds.

With plenty of games to look through, PennLive has put together a list of five games that should be worth tuning into during the year ahead.

Below are five games that should be worth watching during the 2020 NFL season:

Tom Brady, Drew Brees

Week 1: New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It will be fun enough to see Tom Brady in a new uniform for the first time in his Hall of Fame career, but getting to watch his first game come against another future Hall of Famer? That’s going to be a little extra exciting. The two will have plenty of chances to meet up against one another, but the first time will come in the opening week of the season. Brees holds a slight 3-2 edge against Brady, but two of those wins came when he was still a member of the San Diego Chargers. Both offenses are high powered with Brees returning weapons like Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas and Brady having an all-new arsenal with Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski and Chris Godwin to throw it too. There should be plenty of fireworks going on in New Orleans.

Week 2: Cleveland Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The two football teams in Ohio have not exactly been known for their successes of late, with the Cleveland Browns having not reached the playoffs since 2002 and the Cincinnati Bengals having not won a playoff game since 1990. Each has taken franchise quarterbacks first overall in the past couple seasons, however, with Baker Mayfield going first to the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft and the Bengals taking Joe Burrow first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. The two fanbases have staked a lot into each quarterback, and these two will get their first chance to square off in Week 2 when they meet in Cleveland for a Thursday Night Football showdown on the NFL Network.

Week 3: Baltimore Ravens vs. Kansas City Chiefs

The first week of the season will give NFL fans two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever throw it. Week 3 will deliver a matchup of the two most exciting, up and coming quarterbacks in the league. Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 NFL MVP, and Lamar Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP, will meet up in Baltimore for what figures to be another high-powered offensive game. The two teams are going to likely enter the year as the two most likely teams to win the AFC in what could be an AFC Championship Game preview.

Week 13: Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams

The Arizona Cardinals offense could be one that generates plenty of excitement in 2020. Kyler Murray is back under center for his second season and a new weapon in DeAndre Hopkins at wideout, which should lead to some exciting plays during the year, but the matchup against the Rams should really be one to watch. Hopkins will be squaring off against cornerback Jalen Ramsey, a former AFC South foe from when the two were on Houston and Jacksonville, respectively. The last matchup featured an angry Ramsey that ultimately led to his trade away from the Jaguars.

Ron Rivera

Week 16: Washington Redskins vs. Carolina Panthers

Ron Rivera did not exactly leave the Carolina Panthers on good terms. After becoming the winningest coach in franchise history and leading the team to a Super Bowl, Rivera was fired midseason by the Panthers after the owners wanted a change. It didn’t take him long to join the Washington Redskins. The Panthers went after defensive players hard in the draft, but Washington picked up some playmakers on that side of the ball as well, adding former Ohio State defensive end Chase Young and former Pa. high school product Khaleke Hudson. Both teams are coming into the year with relatively uncertain offenses with Dwayne Haskins hoping to be the answer in Washington and Carolina likely leaning again on Kyle Allen, so this game could be more fun to watch for the defensive matchup.
