Despite staging multiple protests and complaining to the MC authorities, shopkeepers of Scooter Market near Bhai Chatar Singh Park are still waiting for the removal of a garbage dump located next to their shops.
They have been demanding from the MC to remove the garbage dump for the past over eight years but their complaints given to the civic body are falling on deaf ears.
In this rainy season too, the shopkeepers are facing issues due to the foul smell emanating from the dump. Heaps of waste infested with mosquitoes and flies is common on the road. Even assurances given by elected representatives are falling flat as the dump has not been removed from the market.
Satinderpal Singh, president, Scooter Sellers’ Association, said they had complained to the authorities concerned many times during the past several years but a number of shopkeepers and their staff were still forced to work under insanitary conditions. The waste piled up on the road near the shops cause troubles for commuters too.
“Stink emanating from the dump is unbearable. We were earlier assured that the dump will be shifted soon to any other place but nothing has been done till date. Many shopkeepers and their staff have fallen ill due to unhygienic conditions caused by the dump. We appeal to the government to remove it from the market at the earliest,” he said.
The shopkeepers said earlier, they used to run their businesses on Gill Road. The Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2011 had ordered to shift Scooter Market (from Gill Road) to a new premises. Later, the market was shifted to booths under the flyover near Bhai Chatar Singh Park.
“We were allotted shops by the MC at the market located under the flyover. However, the civic body has failed to provide us a safe environment to run our business. Our complaints are being ignored by the MC. If the authorities really want to improve rankings in the Swachh Survekshan 2021, it should pay attention towards such issues in the city which are causing trouble for people. The garbage dump from the Scooter Market should be removed at the earliest,” said a shop owner.
Meanwhile, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu said they would take required steps for the removal of the dump from Scooter Market.
