Student Activities team plans another exciting year of campus fun - Liberty - Liberty News

Behind the many exciting events and social activities that Liberty University offers to its student body every year is a dedicated and passionate team known as Student Activities.

The energetic crew of eight full-time employees (including three supervisors) and 14 part-time student event staff plan more than 80 events each year, from concerts to movie, bingo, and trivia nights as well as the popular open mic nights and Coffeehouse.

“We work tirelessly all summer long to make sure that these events are able to happen,” said Student Activities supervisor Avery Watts. “We talk with outside vendors to bring them to some of the events. It takes a few months, but we are really excited.”

Whether it is for a freshman looking to make new friends or an upperclassman looking to expand their relational circle, Student Activities specially creates events that give all Liberty students the opportunity to participate and become more connected to their campus community and culture.

“I got involved with Student Activities through going to the events when I was a freshman in college,” said senior Student Activities employee Kaitlyn Skarstein. “My favorite part is being able to communicate with the student body and get to know them on a more personal level while being able to serve them.”

The staff kicks into high gear even before classes begin. Every new school year starts off with a blitz of activities as students move to campus. This year, Welcome Week events included a Back to School Bash, outdoor movie night, bingo night, open mic, and jazz evening featuring Liberty alumnus Drew Lafferty and his Swing Set orchestra. Block Party, a campus favorite that celebrates the end of the first week of classes, is set for this Saturday, Aug. 29.

The staff is also known for bringing some of the country’s best musical talent to campus. Skillet, The Devil Wears Prada, and John Mark McMillan are among the featured bands for the 2020-21 school year. Beyond the usual events throughout the year, Student Activities is excited to offer a plethora of new events this year, including pottery, coffee brewing, and cake decorating classes.

“It takes a lot of organization to put these events on,” said senior Student Activities employee Preston Glisson. “We have a great organizational team that makes sure all of the boxes are checked and the logistics are taken care of.”

Student Activities is part of Liberty’s Campus Recreation Department, which offers a vast array of recreational activities, including year-round skiing and snowboarding at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center, Outdoor Recreation (including activities at the Hydaway Outdoor Recreation Center and trips), the Liberty Mountain Equestrian Center, Liberty Mountain Gun Club, Liberty Mountain Skatepark, and intramural sports.
