The UFC heavyweight scene has just said goodbye to Daniel Cormier, but it seems his longtime rival Jon Jones is on the way to take his place.
Exactly when that will be is up for debate, but Jones has confirmed that he dropped his light-heavyweight title so he could concentrate on his jump to heavyweight.
It would make sense for current champion Stipe Miocic to face Jones in a superfight of sorts, but as UFC president Dana White has indicated, the division doesn’t just stop because Jones enters it – no matter how great he is.
Francis Ngannou has been on a tear with four first-round knockouts and he seems primed to face Miocic again. White said as much after Miocic and Cormier, but it seems as if the champion has other ideas.
“Francis isn’t exciting to me, already put on a 25-minute clinic on how to beat him,” Miocic wrote on his Instagram story. “Want a new challenge! Would love to box.”
Miocic might not have the crossover appeal that some over UFC stars have, but he’s already solidified himself as one of the great heavyweights.
The money is in fighting Jones, but passing over Ngannou would be detrimental to UFC rankings system.
Understandably, Ngannou would be upset if UFC went that route, even if Miocic is pushing for it.
“To be honest, I think I should fight the winner, regardless of who won the fight. Since it was Stipe, I think it would be good for me to have my rematch and the title shot,” said Francis during a recent edition of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show 10 days ago.
“We have to do what needs to be done, I think I deserve the title shot so I should have it.”
“I haven’t been told that. I am confident but I don’t know exactly what is happening with UFC executives and what is their mindset,” he said.
“I see that they are not really clear on the answer of me deserving the title shot or where I’m fighting next. I don’t know what it is. I don’t understand why it’s not clear for them to say. It is a very frustrating situation right now. It’s not only what I want, but it makes sense.”
“So because I think I should be next in the line, it should be me, so yes, I would be upset about that,” said Francis.
