Heard on Main Street: Just be yourself. No one can say you are doing it wrong.

Completed mail-in ballots for the primary may be dropped off at the Tisbury Town Hall during business hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. You may hand them in to a worker through the service window. Do not put them in the box in front of the hall.

You can still avoid the crowd. Tomorrow is the last day before the election for in-person voting. It’s open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, at the back of the fire station.

My sad tale this week is about a tire. It began on Monday. I didn’t even know I had a problem until someone told me that the front right tire was flat. I probably would not have noticed until I tried to drive. But the horror story was AAA. After no call back in an hour or two, I called again. Then, of course, that delay meant the tire place was closed when I got there.

Finally, my AAA call was answered by a live agent who kindly made the contact. The local AAA guy called when he arrived at the car. We were each pleased that neither of us needed to have personal contact.

Then he called me again after the horrid temporary was put on. I resent the fact that most carmakers refuse to make the well under the trunk big enough for a regular tire. The AAA man also warned me that the lug nut had broken. At the time, I did not even know what that meant.

Then after I got into Island Tire, I was told that the damage was so bad that I needed a new tire. Thankfully, they took care of that. It took a few days, probably because I have a Subaru. I was so happy when Island Tire called to say the tire was in. But then there was a further delay there to wait for someone to bring new lug nuts.

Now I have had enough of lug nuts, though now of course I know what they are. But the next question is, Why did it break? I never even heard of that happening before.

Tisbury Waterways Inc., our local environmental nonprofit, will hold a virtual annual meeting on Thursday, August 27, starting at 5 pm. Hear updates on the activities of TWI and a report from their Tashmoo Pond staffer, Nelson Sigelman. More: info@tisburywaterways.org.

I have been digging in my cellar, searching for books to read. I will not complain that the library takes a long time to get us books, especially because they are protecting the readers from any virus contagion.

What amazed me was that I must have had a banner year last summer at the book sales. I had a whole shelf full of books that I had forgotten about. I am fussy about what I want to read — and when I want to read what. Sometimes I want a good mystery, other times I prefer what one publisher calls “gentle reads.” Because sometimes that is what I prefer. A friend gave me some really good nonfiction too.

Heads up for teens and tweens: You should check out the Battle of the Books for Teens tomorrow evening, August 28, at 7 pm by Zoom. You must register to compete in a trivia contest based on six popular teen books. The prizes for first, second, and third place are gift certificates from Bunch of Grapes. Registration is required at bit.ly/2EzH1dq.

I had a lovely thank-you note from my eldest granddaughter. Usually, it is a quick call or maybe a text or email. This was so nice. A well-written note on a pretty card can always brighten my day.

Miracles still happen. The brakes weren’t set on a truck, and it rolled backward down the hill, crashing across Main Street in the middle of a summer day in August. And no one was hurt. That is a miracle. Of course, the planters put up by Kenny Ivory for the Friends of Tisbury suffered some damage. But be glad no one was hurt.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Jessica Dolliver next Monday. Wednesday belongs to Edwin Gould-Hart.

Heard on Main Street: Until I came to the Island, I didn’t know that turkeys came in herds.
