WOU (1-1) didn't have any trouble piling up the hits as they combined for 35 hits over the 16 innings. The Wolves hit .473 in the two games, with Jacob Maiben and David Gibons each tallying six-hit days. Twelve players drove in a run with Jacob Maiben and Derek Maiben leading the way with four RBI apiece. Blayze Arcano added three RBI and Hunter Johnson drove in two.
On the mound, Matthew Dunaway had an impressive Wolves' debut going four innings and tallied eight strikeouts, while not allowing a run. Logan Hatley picked up the win in the second game working the first four innings and allowed just one unearned run along with seven strikeouts.
In the season opener, it was a wild back-and-forth affair before Saint Martin's (3-3) rallied for the 7-6 victory. SMU broke through first with two runs in the second inning just to watch WOU answer right back in the home half. With Sam Jones and Tyler Brandenburg on via singles, Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Maiben for the first run of the 2021 season. After Brandenburg stole second, he came home on a single by Jacob Maiben to even the game at two all after the first two innings.
The Saints regained the lead with a run in the third and that lead would hold up until the bottom of the fourth when a Connor McCord sacrifice fly tied the game back up. Derek Maiben walked, stole second and then moved to third on a single by Jacob Maiben before scoring on the sac fly by McCord.
With the game still tied at three entering the seventh, WOU looked to be in good shape when they plated three runs in the frame. McCord, Gibons and Justyn Herzog all opened the inning with singles, with Herzog's single driving in a run. After Ryan Santa Cruz was hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Ryan Witt collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left. Jones then pushed the lead to three at 6-3 when he singled down the left field line to bring in Herzog.
Entering the ninth inning, the Saints rallied plating four runs to take a late 7-6 lead leaving WOU with one last chance to tie or win. Gibons started the inning strong with a single, but after the pinch-runner was caught stealing, a pair of strikeouts ended the game leaving the Saints with the win.
WOU held a big advantage in hits tallying 17 to seven for the Saints. Jacob Maiben and Gibons led the way with four hits, while McCord, Herzog and Jones added two hits apiece. On the mound Mike Peterson started and went the first three innings allowing just one unearned run to take the no decision. After Dunaway's electric four innings, Nathan Bonck and Joe Kinsky went the final two innings with Bonck taking the loss (0-1) after allowing four earned runs.
Seven players tallied a hit each for Saint Martin's, while Finnley Butler (1-0) picked up the win and James Gunther collecting the save after working the ninth.
WOU wasted little time erasing the memories of the first game piling up three runs in the first inning in game two. Later a big nine-run fourth inning helped seal the victory.
Right away the Wolves were threatening with Arcano singling and after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jayden Hanna turned into an error, Arcano came all the way around to score from first. Jacob Maiben then drove Hanna in for a quick 2-0 lead. Alex Garcia capped the inning when he reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Jacob Maiben for the 3-0 lead.
A Hanna triple to start the third turned into another run when Jacob Maiben drove him in with a groundout to second that turned into a throwing error. Then came the fourth inning.
Hunter Johnson jumped on the first pitch doubling to deep center. Anthony Zellner followed with a bunt single and then a fielder's choice turned into an error to bring in the first run of the inning on a ball put in play by Mitchell Hulse. After Hulse stole second, Arcano drove in a run with a single through the left side. Jacob Maiben, Gibons, Garcia and Jackson Holstad then followed a strikeout with four straight singles that plated three runs for a 9-1 lead. Johnson came back up and added a sacrifice fly to center. There were still more runs to be had with Zellner doubling to left for an RBI and then Derek Maiben capped the nine-run inning with a lined triple to left for the 13-1 lead after four innings.
WOU pushed across two more runs in the sixth with Arcano singling to left to score Johnson who walked earlier in the inning. Hanna then finished the inning with an RBI groundout to first.
During what would be the last at-bat in the seventh with the game called after the inning, Johnson picked up an RBI single to left, Derek Maiben added an RBI single through the right side and Arcano reached on a fielder's choice RBI to close the scoring at 18-2.
WOU again had the bats going pounding out 18 hits to outhit the Saints 18-4. SMU committed six errors that led to nine unearned runs. Arcano and Zellner led the offense with three hits apiece, while Jacob Maiben, Gibons, Johnson and Derek Maiben posted two hits apiece. Arcano, Jacob Maiben and Derek Maiben all drove in three runs apiece.
On the mound, Hatley (1-0) grabbed the win going the first four innings, tallying seven strikeouts and allowing just the one unearned run. Nick Parr went the final three innings picking up five strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.
Four players tallied a hit for the Saints, while on the mound Cole Hatton started the game and went the first three innings to end up with the loss (0-2) allowing eight runs (four earned).
The scheduled doubleheader for tomorrow (Friday) at Saint Martin's has been postponed. WOU will look to return to action on Mar. 13-14 when they will travel to Ellensburg, Wash., to face Central Washington in GNAC play.
