One number stands out on the Dare County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) COVID vaccine data dashboard — there are currently zero individuals on the wait list for a shot. As of the last reported data through April 25, DHHS had administered 15,569 first doses of COVID vaccine with 15,197 individuals fully vaccinated. According to the dashboard, there are 300 vaccine appointments available and as previously stated, no individuals on the wait list.
According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which has data that extends to the end of April, 49.4% of Dare County’s adult population has received a first dose and 43.7% are fully vaccinated, numbers that are similar, but slightly ahead of the statewide averages of 49.2% with at least one dose and 40.5% fully vaccinated.
For his part, Governor Roy Cooper has set a goal of having 65% of the adult population vaccinated, stating that at the point, the state could life its indoor mask-wearing mandate. But the same questions loom for the state and Dare County. As the wait lists dwindle to zero, can those vaccination percentages be raised? And how many of those among the unvaccinated can still be persuaded to get their shots?
On May 2, for the second day in a row, the DHHS reported only 2 new cases of COVID-19 in Dare County. In fact, just 2 new cases have been reported in three of the seven days since April 26. Twice in the past week, however, new cases reached double digits — with 15 reported on April 30 and 11 on April 28. The inconsistency makes it harder to gauge the trajectory of the virus in the county, but more guidance on that subject will be provided on May 4 when the county releases it next significant COVID update
