Tuition break is good, right? | July 5
This new legislation that gives Florida college students a break on tuition for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) classes seems like it might be a good idea, but it looks overly complicated. The interesting part is that our supposedly conservative Legislature is willing to engage in government planning. This has always been a no-no for those on the right who depend on a free market, because a free market is always more efficient than the heavy hand of government! Who can trust politicians to do the right thing in an intelligent manner? Students are consumers of education and will make their choices in the educational marketplace, according to Adam Smith’s invisible hand. Don’t they trust capitalism? Not really. It’s all about politics, political power and what can be done with that political power.

Aren’t fireworks illegal?

I am curious why are there so many firework stands in St. Petersburg if they are illegal? I would greatly appreciate our next mayor doing whatever it takes to get them out of the city and county. The large displays on the waterfront are fine, but does everyone really need to recreate the sounds of a battlefield in their front yards? People don’t realize, maybe because so many wear hearing aids, that the booming cannon/gunfire-sounding fireworks can be 10 times louder to pets. The Times even ran an article about a horse farm in Pinellas Park that has lost several horses over the years to physical issues caused by firework noise. Usually I have to deal with one dog and give him vet-prescribed anxiety meds, but this year all three and one we were pet-sitting freaked out. Our neighbors decided the cannon over the house was a nice touch this year, I guess.

This articles states that Congress “has been operating under a proxy voting system that has allowed (members) to avoid travel to Washington.” So, they are voting absentee for convenience sake? Oh, the irony.
