‘This is an exciting day’: Central Family Life Center celebrates opening of new annex - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Rev. Dr. Demetrius S. Carolina Sr., executive director of the Central Family Life Center in Stapleton, was joined by members of his community Thursday afternoon for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the center’s new annex.

The Central Family Life Center Annex will be used for various events and services, including gatherings with community partners, training programs and administrative work. It will also house the center’s mobile trauma units, which allow for access to areas where people may need help in an emergency. In addition, the two-story facility includes a loft that will be utilized for creative arts programming for youth.

“This annex allows us to continue our programs in a meaningful way, and gives us more space for more training,” Carolina said. “In this facility, we will have coordinations with our community partners, along with jobs, soft skills training and the administrative component of some of the work that we do in order to keep the center moving forward. This is an exciting day, and it has been a long time coming.”

The Central Family Life Center Annex is also being used by YouthBuild IMPACT, which offers services to help young people become community leaders and build the skills they need for success, and True 2 Life, an organization against gun violence. Both of these programs are part of the Central Family Life Center.

“I’m nothing without the True 2 Life men and women I stand in the street with every single day,” said True 2 Life leader Mike Perry. “We have a hell of a team. It’s been a long eight years of doing this work; we’re excited, we planted a seed, and it grew.”

Those who attended the ribbon-cutting celebration include: Edwina Martin, on behalf of the public administrator’s office; Ed Josey, president of the Staten Island branch of the NAACP; Lisa Thompson, of the district attorney’s office, and Assemblyman Charles D. Fall.
