The Colorado Rockies dropped their first home game since August 4th to end a nine game winning streak at home. Sloppy and inefficient pitching combined with an offense that was missing in action for most of the game led to a 8-4 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
A dull gray
Jon Gray started the game for the Rockies, looking to rebound after two less than stellar outings. Unfortunately his woes continued this afternoon against the DBacks. Gray struggled with efficiency and failed to hit his locations well. He got burned for five earned runs on six hits and three walks, including a home run. The majority of his trouble came in two innings. In the top of the second, Gray gave up four hits in a row, including a three-run home run from Daulton Varsho. In the sixth, Gray walked back-to-back batters on full counts. What’s interesting is that in all three of these tough starts, Gray hasn’t struggled to strike out hitters. His curveball looked sharp and he had good velocity on his fastball as he struck out eight through 5 1⁄3 innings.
Bullpen blowup
The Rockies’ bullpen struggled during today’s loss, with each reliever allowing a run to cross during their outings. Lucas Gilbreath relieved Jon Gray with one out in the sixth and walked two batters to allow a run to score. Gilbreath was pulled for Robert Stephenson, who walked another run home, then gave up a home run in the seventh. Ben Bowden gave up a leadoff double before getting two fairly quick outs. However, with a runner on third he intentionally walked Ketel Marte to try and avoid giving up a run, only for the next batter to hit an RBI single. Yency Almonte gave up a double and a triple in the top of the ninth to further cement a Rockies loss.
Great, another Rockies killer
His name is Daulton Varsho, and he had the Rockies’ number the whole series. The catcher and outfielder was 5-for-9 this series, hitting two home runs, a triple, and a double. He was a single shy of the cycle this afternoon with four RBIs and a walk as the Rockies failed to contain him. Add him to the list of players who aren’t the best at what they do... except when it comes to teeing off on Rockies pitching.
Offense does too little, too late
The Rockies’ offense was largely missing in action after the first inning, where Connor Joe was hit by a pitch and driven home by a Ryan McMahon double. The Rockies wouldn’t have another hit until the bottom of the eighth inning, as they struggled to get to DBacks starter Taylor Widener, and two innings of former starter Caleb Smith. The Rockies scored four runs on five hits, the majority of both coming in the last two innings of play where the deficit was just too big to climb out of. In the eighth inning, Connor Joe walked to kick off a three run rally with a Brendan Rodgers double and a Ryan McMahon single, throwing in a CJ Cron sacrifice fly for good measure. Unfortunately a Trevor Story strikeout and a Sam Hilliard first pitch pop-up cut the rally short. In the ninth, Dom Nuñez smoked a triple and was scored on a Connor Joe double, but the Rockies couldn’t climb out of the hole any further.

The Rockies will board a plane to the north side of Chicago to take on the depleted Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, kicking off a nine game roadtrip. Antonio Senzatela will take the mound to start the series against Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks with first pitch at 6:05 PM MDT.
