LEETONIA – The Leetonia school district continues to wait on the new turf for its stadium.
Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham this week reported the project has come to a standstill waiting for the turf to be installed. He said the base is ready at this point and the installation is scheduled to begin today.
The project is still scheduled to be completed by the Sept. 10 home varsity football game, Dunham noted.
“It’s an aggressive schedule but hopefully the weather will cooperate,” he said.
The project was expected to be completed for the varsity football home opener Aug. 20 against Sebring, but the turf company delayed delivery. The game was moved to Sebo Stadium in Salem, but ultimately canceled due to Covid.
According to information previously released by Dunham, the project is part of the overall sports complex phased improvement plan initiated in 2004. The district has seen a variety of improvement at the stadium since 2004 in terms of bleachers, lighting, press box, locker room, concession stand, etc.
The board hired Less Contracting for construction of the drainage base for $153,000 and Astroturf Corp. for construction of the synthetic turf for $327,050. The cost of project is being included in the district’s current loan payments for the construction of the stadium in 2004.
Also at the board meeting, Dunham reported the first couple days of school have gone well, but said he likes to wait until after the first week to review the start and make tweaks based on what is working and what is not.
Dunham said the district is committed to a common safe return to school plan, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, approved by all the Columbiana County school superintendents.
Dunham said the common practices for reopening school include strongly recommending masks be worn in school. Since the vaccine is not available for students in grades six and lower, 95 percent of staff members in grades kindergarten through six are wearing masks. He admitted that number is lower in higher grades in which the students can be vaccinated.
The district is also requiring masks be worn on buses per CDC requirements, thermal temperature scans upon entry to the K-12 campus, social distancing of 3 to 6 feet and barriers in place where social distancing is not possible such as the cafeteria. The district administration is also encouraging age eligible students to get the vaccine.
“Leetonia is not any different than other districts in the county,” Dunham said. “We’re going to do what is best to accommodate and keep our kids safe.”
