Twins 3, Tigers 2: A new and exciting version of the Alex Colome Experience - Twinkie Town

The eight innings leading up to today’s ACE were largely uneventful. The scoring was confined to three half-innings.

The Twins scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth. Byron Buxton hit a one-out double to left field, and then the red-hot Jorge Polanco collected his 77th RBI by singling Buck home. With Polanco on the pond, Josh Donaldson wrapped up the Twins’ scoring, with a massive home run. The end.

Meanwhile, the Tigers scored first and last in this game, with one run in each of the bottom of the third and fifth innings. The first run came via a home run, hit by someone named Derek Hill. Today, I learned there is a professional baseball player named Derek Hill. The second run was a Harold Castro double, a fly ball to center that moved Castro over, and then a Zack Short single. Short plays short, in a fun bit of serendipity, by the way.

The rest of the game wasn’t all that interesting. Bailey Ober allowed the two runs on five hits, five strikeouts, and no walks. He pitched six innings, and then Jorge Alcala pitched the next two—with two hits and two strikeouts.

For the Tigers, it was the same sort of tale. Casey Mize also went six innings, striking out four, walking one, and surrendering three runs on five hits. Alex Lange, Miguel Del Pozo, and Joe Jimenez combined to give up one more nonconsequential hit in the remaining three innings.

Del Pozo did leave the game after taking a comebacker to the face. He walked off under his own power, and seems to be alright, but lost so much blood from his chin that the crew had to clean it off the mound.

Alex Colome, as is his wont, made it interesting for Twins fans, and not in a good way. After two groundball outs, Colome induced a soft roller back to the mound from Eric Haase, and then promptly threw the damn ball away. Another throwing error by Colome, and the Tigers had the tying run on third—and the winning run at first. Thankfully OBP-king Robbie Grossman didn’t OBP here, instead flying out to end the game.

Studs:

Bailey Ober
Jorge Alcala
Josh Donaldson

Duds:
No Duds, Twins win!!!
