OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball's Kendra Wait has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after leading the Bluejays to three straight 3-0 victories last weekend at the Mizzou Invitational.
Wait opened her college career with MVP honors at the Mizzou Invitational after averaging 10.22 assists, 3.56 digs, 1.33 kills and 1.11 blocks per set while hitting .440 as Creighton swept Kansas City, Saint Louis and Missouri.
Wait became Creighton's first freshman to start a season-opener at setter since Korie Lebeda in 2005 and finished with 32 assists, seven digs, five kills and two blocks while helping Creighton hit .260 against the Kangaroos.
Hours later against Saint Louis, Wait collected her first double-double when she turned in 31 assists, 10 digs, five blocks and four kills as CU hit .352.
Wait had nine digs and nine assists in the first set against tournament host Missouri, an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, and would finish her weekend with 29 assists, 15 digs, three kills and three blocks in a sweep vs. the Tigers.
Creighton's success marked just the second time in program history that the Bluejays opened with three straight sweeps, having previously done so in 2006, and Wait is the first Bluejay ever to earn MVP honors on the opening weekend of her freshman season.
Marquette's Taylor Wolf brought home BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors and DePaul's Rachel Krasowski was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
Creighton returns to action this weekend at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington, Ky., where it meets USC (Friday, 4 p.m.), No. 3 Kentucky (Saturday, 9:30 a.m.) and Northern Iowa (Saturday, 4 p.m.).
