Liz Norden can finally smile again after welcoming a sweet grandchild into the family.

She’s also helped launch a fundraising organization, “A Leg Forever,” to help those who face mounting bills paying for prosthetics.

“We’re helping a nurse who lost her leg and she brought one of my sons back to life,” she said. “Now we want to help her in a time of need.”

That nurse was among the many unsung heroes following the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013 that killed three bystanders and maimed and injured 260 more. Her two grown sons lost legs in the terror attack.

Friday’s announcement that the Supreme Court has reinstated the death sentence for convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev brought this proud grandmother closer to the justice she has waited for.

“I’ve been waiting for justice for so long, so for me this decision made me feel grateful. It’s bad to feel that way, but I do. We need to start holding people accountable so maybe other families won’t go through what my sons have,” she told the Herald.

She shared a photo of her little granddaughter, dressed in a running suit, who is still shy of a year old but beaming in her daddy’s hands while standing up.

“We bought her a Boston Strong outfit,” Liz added. And they will all be cheering on the team running this April for the family charity.

Rachael Rollins, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, sent out a statement Friday she is also thinking of all the victims.

“On April 15, 2013, Boston changed forever. Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu, Martin Richard, and Officer Sean Collier were murdered, while hundreds of other innocent victims were maimed and wounded,” Rollins said.

“Over the course of four days, Boston and our surrounding towns and cities sheltered in fear and disbelief. Although the scar remains some nine years later, the resiliency of our city, the families of the victims, and the hundreds of brave survivors knows no bounds,” she added.

Count Liz Norden and her sons, J.P. and Paul, who endure.

The justices voted 6-3 that a federal appeals court was wrong to throw out the sentence of death a jury imposed on Tsarnaev for his role in the bombing.

“Dzhokhar Tsarnaev committed heinous crimes. The Sixth Amendment nonetheless guaranteed him a fair trial before an impartial jury. He received one,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority.

Justice Stephen Breyer called on the court to reconsider capital punishment.

Rollins added: “Legal rulings don’t erase trauma and pain. Our focus today, and always, is on the hundreds of families that were deeply impacted and traumatized by this horrific act of domestic terrorism.”
