Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers remain in limbo.
And they’re doing their best to stay calm, cool and collected.
Gutekunst, the Packers’ general manager, is waiting to hear from Aaron Rodgers about what the quarterback plans to do next.
Rodgers is deciding if he wants to return to Green Bay in 2022, ask for a trade or retire. During the NFL’s Scouting Combine Tuesday, Gutekunst said things have largely been quiet on the Rodgers Front.
“No new updates,” Green Bay’s general manager said. “I do think, specifically with Aaron, I think he’s got a very tough process that he goes through to get himself ready to play every season. It’s a big commitment. He’s done that for a long time. It certainly shows in the results. I think he feels he needs to do that to play at the level he plays at. I know that weighs on him.”
Rodgers has one year remaining on his contract and currently counts $46.66 million against the salary cap. If Rodgers wants back in, the Packers would almost certainly give him a new deal.
“It’s part of the process,” Gutekunst said. “I know (Executive Vice President) Russ (Ball), obviously, does a good job and he’s prepared for any which way we might go.”
Green Bay has a handful of free agents, led by wide receiver Davante Adams, cornerback Rasul Douglas, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and offensive lineman Lucas Patrick. But the Packers’ hands are tied until they hear from Rodgers.
The NFL’s new league year starts March 16, and Green Bay almost certainly needs a decision from Rodgers before then.
“I would hope so, yeah,” Gutekunst said of getting a decision by March 16. “That’s obviously the start of the new league-year. There’s a lot of decisions that have to be made before that. So, that would be helpful. I would think we would know something before then.”
