The pile of loose change jingling in your pocket or sitting in a jar at home has taken on a whole new value lately.
As the economy plays catch-up and local businesses strive to recoup lost revenue as a result of state mandated closures, commercial operators have been dealing with one residual effect that many hadn’t foreseen in their reopening business plan: a lack of quarters, pennies, nickels and dimes available to complete cash transactions.
The shortage is affecting local businesses. Ocean State Laundry in Middletown now recirculates coins in-house to keep from running out. However, that didn’t stop their banking partner, BankRI, from requesting a helping hand.
“They actually called us and asked for all of our quarters,” said manager Karyssa Cilley, adding that they obliged the bank with a couple of 10-gallon buckets. “It was definitely out of the ordinary.”
Citizens Bank on East Main Road, which in normal times would be supplying their business customers with all the coins they require, tells its tellers to do the best they can until the supply runs dry.
“Someone will come in and ask for three rolls of quarters and we have to turn them away,” said Jay Butler, branch manager. (Read More)
