EUGENE — Oregon’s offseason competition officially began Thursday, and though the pads aren’t on yet, it’s clear all four quarterbacks are getting an earnest assessment beginning this spring.
The Ducks opened spring practice this morning outside the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex with Anthony Brown, Ty Thompson, Jay Butterfield and Robby Ashford all getting reps.
There wasn’t an opportunity for media to view practice, but newcomers drew the attention afterward.
“We’re excited about that group,” Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. “There’s a lot of talent in that room. ... If today’s an indication of what we’re going to be like, it’s an exciting time for Oregon because these guys did a really good job today. They’re very competitive. We’re going to place them in competitive situations.”
Brown is the only returning signal-caller to have played last season or even attempt a collegiate pass.
But Thompson, the highest-rated QB recruit in program history, Ashford and Butterfield aren’t going to make it easy for the senior to keep the job.
“Ty, he looks the part,” Cristobal said. “We knew he was a great talent coming in, and in the little that we’ve seen he hasn’t disappointed. As well as his competitive nature, him and all those guys, they attack the opportunities that we have. Whether it be a workout, whether it be a film session, they attack it. They’ve got the right DNA. We expect great things from Ty, no doubt.”
Butterfield is the only quarterback to have been with the Ducks at this time last year, albeit for just four spring practices. He didn’t play last fall and combined with Ashford getting attention while playing baseball, Brown returning and the hype surrounding Thompson, Butterfield has gotten lost in the shuffle to some on the outside. But Cristobal made it clear it’s not that way inside the program.
“He is certainly not flying under the radar in practice because he’s doing a great job,” Cristobal said. “He’s talented. He’s a big guy. When we recruited him, he was really thin and the weight room has certainly paid off for him. It’s impressive to watch him throw the football with such ease. He’s a guy who can throw it from the hash to outside the opposite numbers, which not many guys can do that. He’s very smart. He’s very accurate. Hard worker. Another guy that’s tough.”
Ashford is splitting time with UO baseball, where he is in a rotation in center field. Cristobal said the former four-star prospect made a jump academically from the fall to winter and it’s carrying over on the field.
“He’s an exceptional competitor,” Cristobal said. “I look forward to seeing more.”
