Each year, the sports desk takes on its largest project of the year — the Beaumont Enterprise High School Football Preview.
This year’s edition, which is inserted into today’s paper, has team schedules, preseason rankings and special features highlighting some of Southeast Texas’ best football talents.
I’ve been excited about this edition since the planning stages. I even had my doctor move up my return to work date so I could be involved in the planning and production.
With so much talent and story lines surrounding Southeast Texas football, we actually had a competition for which features would make it in the preview. Then another close call for which would become the cover story.
No matter which story was to become the face of the preview, we had a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.
Sports reporter Matt Faye carried the bulk of the reporting and writing, and he delivered with a column and multiple features for the preview.
In addition to Faye’s work, we called on a couple of local Southeast Texas football veteran sports writers to assist us with the edition. Tom Halliburton and Scott Loar’s contributions to the preview allowed us to accomplish our more ambitious goals for this issue.
Delivering the editorial was its own challenge, but handling the logistics for getting the art together was a different puzzle to solve. Staff photographer Kim Brent went on a tear getting practice photos and photoshoots completed in a roughly three-week window. I even called upon one of our reporters, Meagan Ellsworth, to do a photoshoot when options were getting thin and time was running out.
A special thanks goes out to KUSA Aviation and Ten West Diner for allowing us to use their space for photoshoots.
Click on each team name for an in-depth look at players to watch, what we expect this year and more.

Check back throughout the week as more teams are added.
I asked for a plane and KUSA Aviation gave me exactly what I needed.
I asked Ten West for an absurd amount of pancakes and they still managed to make more pancakes than I expected.
Even with a million things going on simultaneously on our end, they were ready for us on the exact date and time we needed.
I anticipated organizing a photoshoot with players from three different teams at an airplane hangar would be challenging. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. All three players were immediately on board and KUSA Aviation provided exactly what we needed.
It required a full team effort to pull off this. I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish and present to all the football fans in Southeast Texas.
