Another big domino of the NBA offseason fell yesterday when the NBA announced the full schedule for the 2021-22 season. For the Boston Celtics and their fans, it adds to the excitement of the upcoming season, especially after last season’s disappointment.
It’s been well documented by now that the Celtics fell well below expectations last season on their way to a first round exit at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets. However, this offseason has seen tons of change for the C’s, and it could end up being just what this team needs to get back on track.
While a third star hasn’t been added to pair up with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, new President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has done a good job of bringing in some cost effective veterans who can come in and help out their two young stars. This should allow Boston to have a much better season than their previous one.
As a result, it’s easy to understand why fans are excited about the release of the new schedule. It’s always fun to take a look and start trying to figure out which games the Celtics can win and which might be a bit tougher to pull out. With the schedule in full out now, let’s take a look at three of the most exciting games on the Celtics schedule this upcoming season.
Boston Celtics exciting game No. 3: March 13 vs. Dallas Mavericks
An initial look at the schedule may provide some confusion as to why a random game against the Dallas Mavericks in March would be among the more exciting games on the Celtics upcoming schedule. While these two teams gave us some great basketball to watch year (anyone remember Luka Doncic‘s crazy buzzer beater three last season?), there has to be a reason this game ranks so high.
That reason is Kevin Garnett. After announcing Garnett’s number five jersey would be sent to the rafters in February of 2020, the Celtics haven’t had a proper chance to give Garnett and Boston fans the opportunity to celebrate his legacy properly. That is set to change on March 13th this upcoming season, as this game will play host to Garnett’s number retirement ceremony.
For that reason alone, many Celtics fans should be quick to circle this date on their calendar for the upcoming season. Garnett’s impact on the Celtics latest iteration of “the Big Three” was instrumental to them raising their most recent banner. Without him, there is no banner number 17.
Celebrating Garnett’s legacy looks like it will be an immediate highlight from their upcoming season. Despite playing just six seasons in Boston’s, Garnett’s impact on not only his team, but the city of Boston, was huge. He personified Boston’s desire to do whatever it takes to win, and his “anything is possible” cry after winning the 2008 Finals is immortalized as one of the greatest moments in not just Celtics history, but NBA history as well.
On the surface, this game is sure to be an entertaining one as well. Anytime you can put two guys like Doncic and Tatum against each other, good basketball is going to follow as a result. The matchup against the Mavericks is just icing on the cake for what should be one of the most exciting nights of basketball this upcoming season for the Celtics.
