Purdue Splits Doubleheader with Hofstra in Exciting Comeback - Sports Illustrated

SANFORD, Fla. -- GAME 1: In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Hofstra filled up the box score on the offensive end and overpowered the Purdue pitching staff handing the Boilermakers a 13-6 loss. Like the season opener, Purdue (1-1) and Hofstra (1-1) went back and forth holding the lead until Hofstra blew the door open courtesy of a seven run inning in the top of the sixth inning. The Pride had four hits and drew four walks in the inning and got some help from the Boilermakers who committed a costly infield error, as well. The freshman right-handed pitcher Jett Jackson made his Purdue debut and pitched well to contact retiring nine of 15 batters faced. Jackson was able to pitch three innings only giving up one hit until he gave up consecutive singles in the top of the fourth, which later scored in the inning. The Pride ended up tacking on four runs in the frame.

Purdue trailed 4-1 through four innings, until a four-run inning of their own came thanks to the bat of senior Bryce Bonner, who was the Boilermakers' standout player of the afternoon going 2-2 for 3 RBI's in a pinch hitting role.

However, Purdue's 5-4 lead was quickly squandered to the seven run inning in the top of the sixth frame that propelled the Pride to their first win of the series and season. Hofstra totaled 16 hits against five Boilermaker arms who saw action on the mound.

Purdue's Conner Tomasic (0-1) was officially handed the loss and Hofstra's Lucas Hall (1-0) recorded his first win for the Pride.

The Boilermakers have an opportunity to quickly erase the bad taste in their mouths as the second leg of the doubleheader begins at 5:15 p.m. ET in Sanford, Fla. with Lafayette product, Jackson Smeltz getting the nod as the starting pitcher for Purdue.

GAME 2: The second leg of Saturday's doubleheader was quite reminiscent of Friday's game. Purdue (2-1) turned on the throttle in a late game scenario and completed a three-run deficit and scored nine unanswered runs in a 10-4 victory over Hofstra (1-2).

The Boilermakers got off to a hot start as JUCO transfer Kyle LaPlante hit a solo-home run over the left field wall. LaPlante now has 5 RBI's on the weekend through three games in the series.

However, Hofstra responded by scoring four unanswered runs and seemed to be in control, as they blanked Purdue five consecutive innings on the defensive side.

The game took a turn in the bottom of the seventh inning after senior standout catcher Zac Fascia lead off the frame with a double and forced a pitching change. Shortstop Evan Albrecht came through in the clutch and delivered a two-out double bringing home two runs to tie the game 4-4.

The Boilermakers didn't stop there, as they carried their momentum into the eighth inning. On the defensive side, Purdue's Cory Brooks caused a 3-6-3 double play to end the top half of the inning. Brooks was excellent on the bump, pitching five innings, only giving up one run in relief.

At the plate, Purdue was unfazed by the big moment and broke the tie thanks to a Fascia sacrifice fly, which plated LaPlante. As the inning continued, the Boilermakers were able to load the bases bringing up JUCO transfer Miles Simington.

Simington made his impact and hit the first grand slam by a Purdue player since the 2017 season. Purdue plated six runs in the bottom frame of the eighth inning and took a 10-4 lead.

The Boilermakers took the game by that margin with Cory Brooks (1-0) getting the win and Hofstra's Andrew Mundy (0-1) suffering the defeat. Purdue now sets their sights on potentially winning the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET in Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium.
